Hi and Lois debuted in 1954 during the post-World War II economic boom.  Residential air conditioning window units were just another way of keep up with the Joneses...they were a relatively new thing and weren't cheap, so most middle class families did without.  Wide-spread central A/C really wasn't a thing until the late 1960s.

In the middle of summer with nothing cooling the house except for a couple of fans, I imagine most suburban housewives dispensed with the "Ozzy and Harriet" stereotype and did all of their household chores with as little clothing on as possible.

...or none at all.  :D
