My mother didn't want me seen as 'not normal'. Guess what? Other children realised I wasn't normal and even the teacher labelled me weird and said it was my own fault I was bullied because I was weird and annoying in class. I was super-bright and called out the answers, constantly fidgeted and swung on my seat, found any excuse to get up and leave it unless I was in the flow and then I'd get grumpy if I was made to stop.. Yet I was still a chatterbox, lazy, weird, loud, know-it-all etc.

My parents avoided having me tested as a child for fear that the doctor would put me on "drugs". I can't tell you the suffering I experienced because of it. Please, please, please have your kids tested and if they have the diagnosis get them the treatment they need (e.g. coaching and medication if that works for you).

I have tried to tell this to a couple of people... I would much rather have gotten ADHD and engendered the 'That's not real' or whatever than internalising that I was lazy/bonkers/flighty/undependable/stupid etc.
