Meg

Very excited for this! It’s a bit late for me (my baby is three weeks old today) but better late than never!!! There have definitely been unique challenges in pregnancy and post partum with adhd and I’m looking forward to the mirror here!

I’m sorry to hear Jessica’s discharge from the hospital has been delayed. I hope she’s able to return home soon (if she hasn’t already). I know from experience that extended hospital stays can be particularly overwhelming and dysregulating (and I didn’t have the added stress of having just given birth). In the video, Dusty mentioned in passing that older parents are more likely to conceive a child with Down syndrome, and I think it’s important to bring up a few points in response to that. First, those diagnosed with Down syndrome are part of the vast spectrum of human form and experience, and their births are not something that should be painted as a negative clinical outcome or something that should give older parents pause before trying to conceive. One need only look to places in Europe where the termination rate for fetuses diagnosed with Down syndrome is at or near 100 percent to see the very real consequence of that type of framing. Second, I think every parent should ask themself a simple question before they choose to conceive or help their partner conceive (or even before they adopt). “Will/Can I love, accept and support my child unconditionally (including if they are born disabled or become disabled later in childhood)?” If the answer is no, then I think they should seriously consider whether conceiving or adopting a child is a sound decision. We get to choose whether or not to be parents (or at least that basic human right would be universally recognized in an ideal world), but we don’t get to design a child like we’re using a video game character generator. A child might be born disabled or become disabled later in life. There’s no way around that, regardless of a parent’s age or other circumstances. If someone is unable or unwilling to be the parent or caregiver of a disabled child (whatever the child’s disability may be), then they shouldn’t just cross their fingers and hope for a non-disabled child. To be clear, I’m sure Dusty didn’t have any ill intent when they mentioned that older parents are more likely to conceive children with Down syndrome, but I do think it’s important to both create a space where all members of the disabled community (not just ones who share our specific disabilities) feel welcome and that we don’t fall into the trap of validating the medical model of disability.

Nah, her discharge was fine, the integration was recorded before the baby came :) And thank you for the feedback!
