Currently, there are many Tsugaru Shamisen competitions held throughout Japan. The national Tsugaru Shamisen competition serves as a place for Shamisen players to exchange ideas and also as a way to improve their own skills. In this post, we will introduce the national Tsugaru Shamisen competition.

What do you perform at these competitions?

There are various divisions in the competition, but in most cases, solo performances consist of playing Kyokubiki of Tsugaru Jongara Bushi. Each division has a predetermined time limit for performances, so participants create their own Kyokubiki to perform within that time frame. Basic techniques are of course important, but the difficulty and originality of the piece are also judged.

What kinds of divisions are there?

Competitions are divided into different classes, allowing participants to choose divisions based on their age and skill level. The names of divisions may vary from one competition to another, but, for example, there are divisions for children below elementary school age to the elderly aged 65 and above. There are also class divisions such as C-class (beginner division), B-class (intermediate division), and A-class (advanced division). If you are unsure which division is right for you, it might help to attend a competition as a spectator beforehand to get a sense of where you fit in.

In the November competition held in Shiga Prefecture, there is a division called the "video division." In this division, you can easily submit a performance video filmed at your home or in a nearby studio, making it a great way to give it a shot. Even if you're just starting out, attempting the video division could be a good first step!

While we mainly covered the solo division this time, there are also competitions where you can perform accompaniments for songs or participate in ensemble divisions with groups.

Are there any qualifications to participate?

Qualifications to participate vary by competition. Some competitions allow you to participate once your application is completed, while others require a tape audition, and only those who pass can participate. During the tape audition, you will perform your own Kyokubiki or Rokudan. If a tape audition is required, except for the top class, you will need to record your performance and submit it. We believe that being able to play the basic techniques of Tsugaru Shamisen cleanly and clearly is the shortcut to passing the tape audition. So, for those who are considering challenging a competition in the future, I recommend practicing with an awareness of improving your accuracy, including techniques such as Bachizuke, Sukui, and Hajiki.

What kinds of competitions are there?

As mentioned earlier, there are currently numerous Tsugaru Shamisen competitions held in Japan, almost monthly. Each competition has different judges and unique divisions that may not be found in others. Additionally, showcase/demonstration performances by judges and professional players during the competition are also highlighted. Even if you only come to watch, it is meant to be a special experience for Tsugaru Shamisen fans. Planning a trip around a competition could be a great way to enjoy two birds with one stone. From beginners and older participants to professional-level performances, you can hear them all in one day.

現在、津軽三味線の大会が日本各地でたくさん行われています。

津軽三味線の全国大会は、三味線弾きの交流の場であり、自身のレベルアップに繋がる場でもあります。今回は津軽三味線の全国大会について紹介します！

大会では何を演奏するの？

大会には色々な部門がありますが、独奏で演奏するのはほとんどの場合が津軽じょんがら節の曲弾きです。部門によって演奏できる制限時間が決められているので、制限時間内で自分の曲弾きを作って大会に挑みます。基礎的なテクニックはもちろんのこと、曲の難易度や独創性も審査の対象です。

どんな部門があるの？

大会によって様々なクラス分けがされており、自分の年齢やレベルに合わせて出場部門を決めていきます。大会ごとに名称は変わるのですが、例えば年齢別で言うと、小学生以下の部から65歳以上の寿年の部まであります。クラス別ではCクラス（初心者の部）、Bクラス（中級者の部）、Aクラス（上級者の部）というように分けられています。出場前に一度大会を見学してみると自分に合った部門がどこなのかイメージしやすいと思います。

11月に滋賀県で行われている大会では、動画部門という部門があります。自宅や近所のスタジオなどで演奏動画を撮影して気軽に申し込めるので、まずは試しに動画部門から挑戦してみるのも良いでしょう！

今回は主に独奏部門に言及していますが、それ以外にも唄の伴奏をする唄付け部門や団体で出場する合奏の部などが行われている大会もあります。

出るための資格はある？

大会によって、申し込みが完了すれば出場可能になるものと、テープ審査があり合格しないと出場出来ないものとがあります。テープ審査では、自身の曲弾きまたは六段を演奏します。テープ審査が必要な場合は、一番上のクラス以外は演奏を録音して送る必要があります。津軽三味線の基本的なテクニックを綺麗に演奏できることがテープ審査の合格の近道になると思いますので、これから大会にチャレンジしたいと考えている人は、撥付やスクイ・ハジキなどのテクニックを疎かにしないで今から精度を高めることを意識して練習することをお勧めします！

このようにほぼ毎月？というほど現在多くの津軽三味線の大会が日本では開催されています。大会ごとに審査員の先生が異なっていたり、その大会にしかない部門があったりとそれぞれに特色があります。また、大会の途中で行われる審査員の先生やプロ奏者のアトラクション演奏も見どころです。
