Vocabulary List

Tuning - to adjust the pitch of the Shamisen

Sukui -  producing sound through upstroke of the bachi

Tataki - to strike a string and shamisen body with bachi to produce sound

Kawa - the ‘skinned’ part of the shamisen’s main body that is struck with Bachi

Bu / Rin -  unit of measurement for the height of Koma, 1 Bu is approx 0.3 cm and 1 Rin is approx 0.3 mm. eg 2 Bu 6 Rin (Ni Bu Roku Rin) is approx 0.78 cm

Chiri-tere - a phrase that is played through Tsubo position 4300 with combination of Sukui and Hajiki

Sawari - the section on the upper part of the shamisen neck just below the kami-goma (the 1st string) that is raised or lowered in order to create a buzzing noise that brings out the true Tsugaru sound. Tsugaru Shamisen has a screw called Azuma Zawari (Sawari). Note: some cheaper Tsugaru Shamisen may not have a Sawari

Tsubo - positions on Sao (shamisen neck) that indicate where to hold strings with the string-hand fingers to determine musical scale of sound

Hajiki - to pull off a string with index/ring finger of your string-hand to produce sound

Ushirobachi - to strike bachi at the lower part of shamisen body (closer to the Koma)  to produce a change in sound dynamics and rhythm

Maebachi - to strike bachi at upper shamisen body (closer to neck) to produce a change in sound dynamics and rhythm

Bachizuke - to create rhythm by using Maebachi and Ushirobachi

Itomichi - the groove on the nail of the index finger to hold mainly the 3rd string (sometimes 2nd string, depends on a player’s preference)

Kyokubiki - performing a piece on the shamisen alone, with no singing - Tsugaru Jongara Bushi is often referred to as ‘Kyokubiki’

Chiri-chiri - a phrase that repeats Tataki, Hajiki, Tataki, Hajiki on the third string

調弦 - 三味線の音程を調整すること

叩き（たたき） - バチで糸と皮を叩くようにして音を出すこと

スクイ - おろしたバチを糸の下から上に向かってすくい上げて音を出すこと

はじき - 左手の人差し指や薬指でで糸を弾いて音を出すこと

皮（かわ）- 三味線の胴に張られている白い部分。動物性の本皮と合皮がある

駒（こま） - 三味線の胴と糸の間にはさみ、糸を支え、糸の振動を胴に伝えるもの。細かく高さが異なる種類がある

〇分〇厘（ぶ / りん） - 駒の高さを表す単位。1分は約 0.3cmで1厘は約 0.3mm

チリテレ - 4300のツボでスクイやはじきを組み合わせたフレーズの名前

サワリ - 三味線の棹の上部裏側に付いているネジのこと。サワリを使うと「ビーン」という三味線独特の音の響きを追加させることができる

ツボ - 音程を決めるために左手の指で弦を押さえる棹(さお) の場所のこと。１~２０まである

前撥（まえばち） - 三味線の胴の前の方 [棹（さお）に近い方] で音を出すこと

後ろ撥（うしろばち）- 三味線の胴の後ろの方 [駒（こま）に近い方] で音を出すこと

バチ付け - 前撥・後ろ撥を使ってリズムを出すこと

糸道 - 主に三の糸（人によっては、二の糸）のツボを押さえるのに、人差し指の爪につける溝。その溝に糸をはめて押さえることで、より鋭い・クリアな音が出る

曲弾き（きょくびき） - 唄が入らず三味線だけで一曲演奏すること

チリチリ - 三の糸で、叩き・ハジキ・叩き・ハジキを繰り返すフレーズのこと
