Thank you so much for another great year!
In this post, we will cover a special maintenance for the shamisen as a way to thank it for its hard work throughout the year.

We have already covered the maintenance on a regular basis before, so this is a maintenance for once in a while.

Shamisen
Let’s take off the strings and wipe it clean even if you normally leave the strings when you clean up.
You can double check how to remove the strings in this video:

*If the surface of the shamisen neck is worn down by the strings, that is “Kanberi”. Please consider sending it for a repair!

Once you have removed the old strings, it might also be a good idea to change to new strings for a new year! Also, Itomaki tend to have more dust than other places, so wipe them clean thoroughly. Remove Doukake to wipe it clean as well. If the Hizagomu (knee grip) or Neo is tattered, it is time to replace it.

Bachi
When you use Bachi a lot, it could get a string mark or chipped.
If the chip is too large, you will have to send it in for repair, but if it is just a small chip, you can take care of it by yourself. Let’s use this opportunity to take good care of it!

This video covers how to take care of your Bachi, and the tools you use:

Yubisuri
Yubisuri absorbs a lot of sweat and the wood gets on them and makes them red. Many of you may already wash them frequently, but if you do not wash them very often, wash them clean in batches.
You can of course put them in a laundry net and wash them in the washing machine. However, do not dry them in a washing machine, as they may shrink in that case.
If you prefer to wash by hand, you can use a bathtub, bowl, bucket, etc. to soak and wash!
