Another character from the upcoming webcomic by Melanie E and I. This is Dustin. He's obviously into torture because he plays the oboe. More about him later. :)

I played the clarinet first, and was not very good. My teacher had me change over to the oboe, which I found to be easier to play. I had no trouble with the double reed, my problem was that I was having trouble learning to read music. I would try to just memorize the score and the score for the oboe was simpler, and easier to read.

I had exactly this problem with the Cornet in Junior High. Cornets and Clarinets are both Bb instruments. This means that when the musical notation reads C, and you play a C, the horn plays a Bb. I'd been playing the instrument for four years but when I found out this fact, it destroyed my ability to read music. It was all a lie! But an oboe is a C instrument, when the notation says C and you do the fingering for C, the instrument plays a C! Much easier on the OCD tendencies of a budding musician.

When I'm composing something, I usually use Oboe for the melody, as it's the closest to the human voice. I find nothing torturous about it. :-)

Well, obviously you can play the oboe. :) But even a French horn can make an awful noise in the hands of a tyro. Woodwinds are notoriously unforgiving of beginner mistakes, as bad as violins to some.
