Speaking of actual southern racists, I’ve got a radio story for ya. Central Virginia is a small entertainment market so radio DJs would pass through here trying to add to their resumes and make it to the big time (at least back in the day). Well one time there was a news story about how someone had done something dumb because of “the rapture” and the metropolitan-born DJ made a crack like, how could anyone believe such a thing? Then right away he got an on-air call from some outraged hick talking about “I tell ya buddy it’s real” and furthermore “they are taking over” and all this guy could do was nervously laugh. He must have been thinking, what the hell kind of hillbilly place did they send me to?
