Hey gang, Luke here with a longish note for your consideration. The fact is, Will and I are in need of your opinions and your advice...

As some of you may have noticed, our regular Superdelegate poll hit a bit of a snag this month — the reason being that Patreon limits polls to 25 choices, meaning that there are now, effectively, not enough slots for the number of nominees we typically get. As a solution, Will and I have gamed out various options: having two polls each month in the initial round (thus expanding the total number of possible nominee slots to 50) or perhaps even having two Superdelegate episodes.

Here's the rub, though. Each of these would only ever be interim solutions because the pod continues to grow and the number of SDs along with it. What this means, among other things, is that we would likely only be punting the problem down the road. And what would the solution look like if there were, say, 250 of you signed up in the SD tier? Three SD eps every month? Five separate polls for the first round alone and, along with them a cumbersome nomination/voting process?

The truth is, when we initially set up the SD tier, we never imagined that more than 25-50 people would ever sign up. But, thanks to all of you, it's continued to grow along with the audience for the show as a whole. Though that's obviously a good sign in many ways, it has had the unintended consequence of diluting the actual value of being a SD because the weight of an individual vote is less and less the more people join at that level: the more people join, the more films are nominated; the more films are nominated, the less likely it is yours will make it to the runoff or be picked.

So, we'd be very interested in your thoughts about how the SD tier might conceivably be reimagined. We don't want to do anything hasty or make changes without hearing from you all, and we'd obviously like to keep something like the current SD system of nominations in place if possible.

What do you all think? Is the way to do this to completely redesign the current system so that being a SD means getting a different perk (for ex: access to a monthly livestream, exclusive Q&A, or something else)? We could also introduce a third tier at 15$/month that confers the exclusive privilege to nominate films before they're voted on by the 10$ tier (not crazy about this one myself)? Or, is there some way of preserving the current system we haven't considered? Is there a better way to do polls, perhaps somewhere offsite? Is there a way we can add weight to individual votes so they aren't diluted by more people joining? Are there other benefits/perks/types of content you would prefer over the current monthly SD ritual?

Will and I are very interested in your thoughts and will be reading and considering each of them carefully before we do anything. Rest assured, whatever we do or do not do will not result in the $10 tier becoming less valuable or worth signing up for: our goal, fundamentally, is to enhance the experience so you are all getting your money's worth.

The fact is, the show has grown much more than either of us ever believed it could and some growing pains are probably inevitable. In the radical spirit of managed democracy, we'd like to try and navigate them together.

Let us know what you think.

Chiming in to say, I pay at the $10 tier as a basic minimum token of appreciation for what I get out of the podcast. I rarely suggest movies even when I am bored with old German film. Because if it makes you guys happy, why not.

All of these solutions sound equitable. My suggestion is that we incorporate the concept of "running mates(double feature)" somehow. It's defacto happened a few times, but could add a fun twist to the voting tallies.
