In 2019, Clint Eastwood's RICHARD JEWELL took aim at two institutions — the FBI and the media — that were supposed to save America from Trumpism. We discuss one of the veteran auteur's most beautiful films, which is also one of his most loaded and ambiguous political hot-potatoes. PLUS: David Brooks' expensive meal, Doug Ford's about-face, and Jean-Luc Godard's film criticism.

I don't know if ya'll have listened to the Chapo episode on Richard Jewell but it's one my favorite episodes I've listened to it 3 or 4 times, it's a really genuine and heartfelt discussion.

I had an encounter with the epiphenomenal in Milwaukee just before Trump's election: On a weekend trip from Chicago I went to a Jake's Deli in Milwaukee, famous for its corned beef, but in a moment of arrogant urbanite individualism, I ordered a hot pastrami sandwich. I later learned from a post-election New York Times piece that District 15 in Milwaukee, where Jake's is located, was one of the places where low voter turnout swung the state and the election to Trump. The piece even quoted the cooks at Jake's saying they did not vote. I realized by not ordering a reuben, I had single-headedly thwarted Hillary's victory. I haven't eaten pastrami since.
