I really dislike the "Sharknado"-fication of exploitation and genre films. When I watch the stuff put out in the mid to late twentieth century by Roger Corman and his contemporaries, they were capitalizing on trends, but they still made ambitious and coherent films. As you say, the ethos of B-Movie production has changed with economic changes in the industry. Exploitation directors used to aspire to compete with the major studios, and achieve maximum production value for their budget; now, all of the incentive structures in B-movies reward "so bad it's good" ineptitude, even at its most contrived (i.e. Sharknado). This movie just seems to be latest stage in the devolution of genre films.
