One of the key films of Brazil's Cinema Novo movement, Glauber Rocha's masterpiece TERRA EM TRANSE aka ENTRANCED EARTH (1967) envisions a fictional Latin American country where the left- and right-wing parties both feed from the same trough, and asks what role art can play in revolution, if any. Friend-of-the- show Violet Lucca returns to place the film within the context of Brazil after the 1964 coup that led to decades of military dictatorship.

Great ep though I disagree with Lucca's characterization of pornochanchadas. Due to the extreme patriarchal sexual repression mandated under the dictatorship a lot of these sex comedies would contain subversive messages and themes that could no longer be expressed by the cinema novo moment, even if mostly focused on sexual politics. This is not a defense of every film in the subgenre, rather just a plea to seek out those more interesting films within it and recognize the political merit within them

Today I learned there's a film called Synecdoche: New York set in Schenectady, New York and my brain is already turning inside out. Sounds like a good watch!

I think that the government didn’t see them as threatening to order. Even so, there’s a fine line with the pornochanchadas…I love Dama do Lotação for the reasons you laid out but also it’s just Sonia Braga getting fucked a bunch.
