The 1969 documentary WHAT'S LEFT? captures the Canadian left (and more specifically, Canada's New Democratic Party) being pulled in two directions: by an emerging, student-led generation of radical activists, and an older political class that has either grown pragmatic or complacent depending on who you ask. We discuss the history of the Canadian left, and what has both changed and remained the same in the 50+ years since the film. PLUS: We catch an acute case of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them fever!!!

Couple of other documentaries ab the Canadian left you guys should check out if you haven’t already- Robin Spry’s “Action: The October Crisis of 1970” has an unreal amount of original footage, and the newer doc about the crisis “Les Rose” by Paul Rose’s son. The latter paints a really vivid picture of working class life in Québec at the time, and all the work for the left that Paul Rose did before the crisis that’s often overlooked. Both on NFB!

Also re: Will’s fiery rhetoric question - there are definitely some activists out there with that energy! Thinking of ppl like Desmond Cole, Harsha Walia here and movements like Keep Your Rent and the protests this past summer against encampment evictions in Toronto. Not to mention 1492 Landback Lane, and the pushback against what’s happening on Wet’suwet’en territories. Fills me with hope at least, even if the rhetoric around these issues hasn’t exactly made it’s way into the mainstream.
