Nothing fresh in saying Spielberg’s films believe that the US is fundamentally virtuous and while our institutions may waver from time time, ultimately we’re honest people who will do what’s right. And yet when I think about the US government’s approach to covid 19 the first image that pops into my mind is the mayor from JAWS. Here’s an authority figure who’s recklessly thoughtless all in the name of profit, leaving the protagonists to fend for themselves. It’s a different flavor from Jurassic Park. I wonder if Spielberg had a pre-Reagan era political vibe. Let’s talk about JAWS.
