The acclaimed documentary CRUMB (1994) tells the story of Robert Crumb, the legendary underground cartoonist who has channeled his pain and unleashed his darkest thoughts into some of the funniest and most offensive comics ever made. We discuss how this film captures a longtime culture war lightning-rod during a very different moment in the culture war, and try to articulate usefulness of transgressive art. PLUS: culture wars of many stripes, from the uneasy relationship between Silicon Valley and pornography to Luke's reflections on writing about liberalism for The Atlantic.

A torrent site I'm on has this comment in the Crumb entry (dated 2 years and 8 months ago): "An amazing documentary! I watched it for its penetrating psychological insight. Jordan Peterson said that if you want to understand the mind of a vicious rapist, if you want to know the depths of misogyny to which men can sink, if you want to understand their psychology, then THIS is the documentary to watch."

Speaking of cartoon satirists, I’ve just finished reading a biography of Al Capp, who was sort of the anti-Crumb. His Li’l Abner strip in the 30s, 40s, and 50s was a masterpiece of satire, but he couldn’t take the 60s and became a hippie-baiting reactionary. I wonder how Crumb feels about “wokeness”?
