We travel back to Nixon's America with 1974's DEATH WISH, the franchise-spawning Silent Majority hit in which Charles Bronson transforms from a bleeding-heart liberal to a gun-wielding avenging angel. We discuss how the film's reactionary politics and apocalyptic vision of an American city are still being replicated in conservative media today. PLUS: The Last Blockbuster, new advancements in product-placement technology, and an unlikely new kingpin in the NFT landscape.

I enjoyed this episode. It's definitely an unsettling film. I chose it for my term paper when I took a film studies elective and was surprised back then to feel pangs of moral panic like, isn't the director really trying to actually psych people into actually doing this? Which felt like a dumb thing to think... but it was also just very distracting because I kept trying to analyse his intention instead of just getting into the film. Also! Not mentioned in the podcast but this film does show a very young Jeff Goldblum as wild eyed street hoodlum. Happy to say I never saw any of the sequels.
