A gay communist atheist directing the most reverential film ever made about Jesus Christ? It happened! Pier Paolo Pasolini's THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW (1964) uses neorealist aesthetics to emphasize the material side of Jesus's life over the divine, and foregrounds His politics over his miracles. PLUS: the pleasures and perils of being extremely online during a pandemic, and what conservatives say about democracy behind closed doors.

To Will’s comment re: Judas needling Jesus about the oil: I believe it was an early attempt of hypocrisy-own so popular in modern political discourse (Ooh, AOC calls herself a socialist, and wears an expensive suit in that Vogue photoshoot!) Jesus correctly shut him down with “ hey man, this is the world we live in. Yes I want to change it, no this oil doesn’t negate it, so fuck off”

On the subject of Passolini being on the side of the policeman during the 1968 protests I think you got it pretty spot on in your quick analysis. I have previously seen the quote without the context of who Passolini exactly was and what Italy was like at the time and been somewhat confused. There is a very good explanation of it in a somewhat recent episode of Mark Ames and John Dolans podcast "radio war nerd" by their perennial genius guest "Annibale". The political history of Italy in the 20th century is extremely fascinating, especially for people interested in the potential of left wing movements to succeed in a world dominated by a capitalist superpower. I would especially recommend this episode and their series on the years of lead to Luke. I know you are very well read on the working class history of the Anglo countries, but maybe not quite as well versed in Italian politics? It is very dramatic, its history illuminates how the failure of the left to take power causes a fascist reaction and how the fascist failures causes a communist reaction, the years of lead is very instructive in how governments and intelligence agencies in the future might deal with the threat of a truly strong left wing movement. The episode I referred to where Passolini and his opinions on the police are discussed is here. https://www.breaker.audio/war-nerd-radio-subscriber-feed-1/e/71869638?__cf_chl_jschl_tk__=c801b6f49e00c4a2884d37bbf3022807146645fd-1619184976-0-Ab7nFWXUV7FG9lV4Wq5CCVhVbN4fvlbi-jAfZCcATLGU0EiytS5NYyKODh175zDgCkpVGmRDydhVNXQKU9TdJrZUQzsUdxCT8-FJUTlM2ziIA3QHrxHOeCaZU7RIrNnbRbVnUqwlQU9O2dTphs9S9oX2f32Fe3dqvx8Of8n_Ocaz39dgk1Hs5JrxejjjKt7_9qhGt3Sqmx8nLDlnXUk1hEGI5puAxFGfiquZREpRqR3IRy1S1ImLMuI2C21dk5TX2KUodYDSKpVQuZsXCN7x4fIh0gg1LqB7nPRj1uN2UcLrXSj-7n7_BiDSQBtUWLhLhC4WAof6Riop60vU34UrcE61D2ByFUZYb_Z7jgm4xdC5en79H0ryO2XlcC8v5nU0ZaVOMorLIfDaGPDeklHGQN_6rMK9WFF9vw0Hx3m4XaFCh3G-nIf7IcrOvQCMBHurs6oPJaXV6Zsy6GW4BWCKA2JK8vLsBDciaq9zJsDKekz1iXQLxi-cFJETK3ahEMMmUA In the episode it is mentioned how when fascist protesters try to travel to Bologna and Torino to stage provocative protests in the 60s they often get beat up by the local police. The security forces are generally a right wing force in Italy, but this episode illuminates how at times it was more complicated than that. Furthermore I have to recommend the recent Important cinema club episode on the red scare, seeing how bad Will is at promoting the podcast himself. If anyone likes Michael and Us Im sure they will enjoy this episode https://soundcloud.com/the-important-cinema-club/253-the-blacklist-was-bad EDIT: the Radio war nerd link looks sketchy but it works
