In 2020, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced one of his biggest scandals yet when a charitable organization to which his family had longstanding (and lucrative) ties was given a plum contract to build a high-profile volunteer program for Canadian youth. The ensuing conflict of interest scandal brought down WE Charity (formerly Free the Children), the brainchild of Canuck philanthropy wunderkinds Craig & Mark Kielburger. We watched THE PRICE WE PAID (2021), a fine new investigative documentary by the CBC's The Fifth Estate series, which broke down the WE Scandal and the shady practices of the disgraced charity. We discuss how WE Charity is a perfect symbol for the deep rot in the soul of corporate philanthropy. I GOT PATREON TO SAY THIS! In 2015/16 I attended a We day event because of my extremely liberal grade 6 teacher (who was shitty in a lot of ways). My teacher is a pretty well known and highly regarded teacher in the TDSB largely because of a project she had all her grade 5/6 students do yearly, called Business day. Basically we got divided into groups and had to create a business to sell to the rest of our school (we had to write letters asking parents for money for the project and apply and interview for jobs within our own 'companies' )and the funds would go to the free the children 'charity' where they built schools in Kenya or Haiti (it changed every couple years). It was soooooooo fucking culty, she totally pushed this weird twisted idea of philanthropy on us (also constantly dickriding Justin Trudeau) and basically my school and this teacher got kinda famous in the TDSB for this project that I think they only stopped doing very recently. Like we would spend 7 months on this project and we were totally like a propaganda machine for the keilbergers because she would have us talk at student conferences and stuff across the city CONSTANTLY. Every year a couple of her fav students would get selected to go to WE day and we were like encouraged to buy the merch and stuff. I remember the year I went this band Hedley was there and my friend did the meet and greet our whatever and the next year one of the members was outed as a pedo. Also I remember they had this man who didn't have the bottom part of his body(like legs or pelvis) and he along with a bunch of other seudo empowering people(like 8 yr olds who's parents got them into this weird culty 'philanthropic' speaker position) would get on stage and just say over and over again how we (11 yr olds) were the future!!! it was so weird to me even then and my mom hated it. also we had a club at our school called the Be the Change committee and we wore free the children shirts and planned poetry nights for our school with the goal of raising money for the keilbergers. It was so weird like I could go into more detail but I don't wanna make this annoyingly long. Anyways I always wanted to be able to like tell u guys that story since I heard this episode months ago cuz when I relaized other people found this weird I was so excited like I was being preached all their talking points constantly for two years it was so weird
