The theory that times of strife produce great art is put to the test with Jay Roach's pandemic movie COASTAL ELITES (2020), and fails resoundingly. Bette Midler, Issa Rae, Dan Levy, and others deliver monologues excoriating the Cheeto-in-Chief while making clear that the title "Coastal Elites" is only barely ironic. Also; during school holidays I'd be sent to a school-holiday program thing and once we went to the cinema to see the Ducktales movie and I got left behind and oh boy I sure didnt understand a single thing that was going on!

Re: the otherworldly. As an ardent clinger-on to the idea of magic in adult life; I have to mention Peristal Singum, the labyrinthine installation which existed in Berlin from 2010 to 2014. Situated at the back of a bar, this Gilliamesque testament to ignored safety regulations and willfully ableist access privileges, was an adult version of a childrens jungle-jim just the right side of legitimately dangerous to explore. Almost no representative footage of images of it remain, since the place was so unapologetically under-lit, and predates the better mobile phones. So you just have to take my word - it was the closest thing an adult could experience to visiting the (Bowie) Labyrinth. The Peristal Singum was accessed thus: You buy tickets at the bar, are given a special coin and guided one by one through a 'secret ' door at the rear. At the end of a corridor you feed the coin to a Fortune Teller type device and are granted access up a stairwell. At the top of the stairwell you immediately have to go down a Goonies-type slide tunnel, from which you emerge inside a womb. The womb presents multiple avenues for exploration, not least of which is a cervix at the top of a ladder. Passing through the cervix you crawl through a falopian tube and emerge in a chamber exited through a vagina. Through the flaps of the vagina is a fireman's hole proceeding downwards into darkness. And it continued from there, for about an hour. All gone now though. So the moral of the story is you can rekindle that sense of wonder as an adult, but you have to collapse a major super-power such that a Western metropolitan capital exists into the 21st century with a deficit of regulatory oversight regarding basic safety implementations for a sustained period. Maybe we'll see such things again in 2023?
