In 2008, a great statesman named John McCain was led astray in his presidential bid by an ill-considered VP pick and a shifting zeitgeist that saw a shift away from his brand of gentlemanly politics. At least, that's the premise of Jay Roach's HBO movie GAME CHANGE (2012), based on the Mark Halperin book. We discuss why the film depends a little too heavily on the received wisdom of McCain, and how its vision of politics feels uniquely outmoded in the year 2020. PLUS: fiery hot takes on the 2020 Democratic National Convention.

Re-listened to the episode (it’s a good one, folks!) and it occurred to me that the media that successfully trained a majority of the Western world to think of John McCain as a principled old-timey maverick – instead of as a privileged failson whose lineage allowed him to crash multiple planes until his capture, philanderer who secured a new younger and richer wife to bankroll his political career, crook who let himself be bribed into facilitating cartoonish corruption and finally relentlessly needy limelight chaser – should be less surprised at the ease with which conservatives are able to put aside any cognitive dissonance about Trump.

That part where they're asking Palin about the GWoT (30:00) is so reminiscent of scenes in west world where they wake up the main host and interview her in the basement. Maybe this inspired that?
