I am now reading "Retribution" (Max Hastings) and got to wondering how you plan to teach your kids the history of the "Showa era" (as I understand it is not taught much in schools)

Sort of already started, Stephen. On TV or internet or other places, topics arise. I tell them bits and pieces. They already know that Japanese people and Australian people fought each other in a war. (In fact, my old kyudo teacher fought Aussies in New Guinea.. we had some interesting chats!)

Can you find "The Rising Sun" by John Toland in Japanese translation ?? Toland's wife is Japanese. He wrote a finely balanced analysis of the 1936-45 period it would be a good read for your wife .. I have seen that some young japanese don't know who MACARTHUR was .. do you know much of General BLAMEY ??

Know a little about Blamey. I do hear older people (30+) refer to the Macarthur "era" sometimes. Don't know about the younger ones.
