It was covered on NHK World yesterday. Very sad...very sad indeed. I knew that bullying was common in Japan, as it is in the US, but the pernicious nature of the threats made and remarks made were striking, even to someone as jaded as me. Sadly, irrationality and stupidity are not limited to any one country, although we seem to be cornering the market on it here in the US of late. Apparently, the same sort of thing went on during the "Spanish" flu.

No worries, Ed. I'm here to learn about Japanese culture and society, for better or worse. Whatever it is, you report on it. Fine by me.

I've been reading about this for a while now. More examples I've read about were a few nurses in Osaka whose children were refused at daycare facilities (who didn't even test positive, they were only saving the lives of Covid patients) or the way the government targeted nightlife districts like Kabukicho in Tokyo with PCR test, scapegoating an already stigmatized demographic. It is definitely, as you say, a combination of bullying being acceptable and germophobia. I thought another factor could be an overall lack of sympathy, which you talked about in an earlier video. I have seen some Japanese reports on this though, such as a recent article in Asahi Shimbun. Also, there was a Japanese language Youtuber from Hyogo prefecture who's posted about how her and her mother's disease progressed a few months ago. She did mention bullying, and her story was also mentioned in Mainichi and Asahi, I think. However, in general, I have the same impression that the media is, in general, quick to report on tragic events around the world but pay very little attention to negative Covid-related stories from Japan. That seems to be almost entirely down to people on social networks.
