Grocery stores in my part of the U.S. put up 3 foot square (90 cm) plexiglass shields, but people tend to stand beside them rather than in front to use the card reader and talk to the checkers. Some stores have shut down self-checkout lanes, and some have shut down regular checkout lanes. Nobody really knows what to do, but they feel they have to do something. At least the Japanese have masks and it's normal to wear them.
