A lot of Japanese castles seem small once inside. They look more like military positions than places to dwell at.

Sometimes the "keep" is big enough to live comfortably in, but often they are smaller and are just the last line of defence in case of attack. They had bigger buildings in the castle grounds that they lived in day to day.
