Maybe this can get Batman and Spidey off the bottom of the list: The first screen appearance of Sherlock Holmes was purportedly in 1900, although it was just some one-minute thing, but then followed by a 1905 Vitagraph film (which I was excited might be some long forgotten format, but turns out was just a studio later bought by Warner Bros). Then so, so, much Sherlock and spinoffs and reimaginings, finally culminating in Enola Holmes 2 – the best franchise Henry Cavill has been in.
