The "# block of X Street" thing has come up so often lately. Do y'all not have this in Australia? People don't actually say "800 block of Alpha St." in conversation here, either. It's mostly a newspaper thing, but it's just a shorter way of saying "Something happened on X street between Y street and Z street." The "800 block" just means the section of the street where all the building addresses are in the 800s.
