Yep came across this horrifying article on a Wikipedia trawl “In 2014, a student was struck in a U.S. public school an average of once every 30 seconds.” It’s not like one school or state it’s public and private schools in 19 states and just private schools in 48 states https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_corporal_punishment_in_the_United_States

It’s funny how incredulous y’all sounded at “opting in” to the paddle. I was raised in one of the 19 US states with school corporal punishment, and in my experience the principal will sometimes present a choice between suspension and the paddle. It’s an easy choice if suspension creates a hardship at home for your parents to arrange childcare during work hours. Also, they’d tell you that suspension goes on your “permanent record” and will hurt your chances of getting into a good university, but that corporal punishment doesn’t go on your record.
