Oculus is killin' it with the VR Options.  We had the $99 option for GearVR and the $400 option for the Rift and now we have the Oculus Go for $200!  The Go is going to be a pretty significant point of entry for VR and so we're discussing the possibility of getting into some mobile based game engine builds along with the videos for mobile.

To that end I'd like do a quick check on what you guys are rockin'.   Check all that apply and we'll use the results to see where we should be focusing the most.

So far this year the focus has been on Oculus since that's the easiest to test on with the Vive being a close second through help from the betas and mobile videos being a sort of stretch goal that'd finally coming into fruition.

P.S. - To round out the price options.  Cardboard can be obtained for $5 - $50, Daydream for $99, Windows Mixed Reality for $200-$500, Open VR around that range as well, extending higher up and the Vive recently dropped from $600 to $500 with the release of the Pro which stands above the rest at a cool $1400.

I actually have 2, a Lenovo Windows Mixed Reality Headset and the OSVR HDK 2.0...don't really use the OSVR much anymore though

ShadowSteel18

Yeah I don't have the money to buy a headset.

HTC Vive. I actually got the 6mm vegan leather face cover mod. Really opens up the FOV, easier to clean, and you can wear it for longer play sessions.

Allex

PSVR over here.

sanskrit

Not surprising, higher fidelity headsets Vive and Rift are leading right now.

ShadowSteel18

I may have to drop my pledge if this becomes a VR exclusive. That is until I get a headset.

Usually if a game can be made in VR it can also be made to run without a VR headset in normal WASD mode.

Oculus Rift and Oculus Go :)

Venom Rose

When I save enough I plan to buy a headset, but I have no idea which is the better choice. I'm guessing oculus rift since it's been around the longest.

Nes27

i bought my Oculus rift for 600 usd before prices went down :/ just my luck lol. it was maybe a week later that i got an e-mail that showed 400 usd price and my first thought was "wtf" xD

BlueEdgeCrazy

On windows: Samsung Odysee for sharpness (better than HTC Pro); no trackers because everthing is in the headset; bluetooth 4 (e.g. as dongle) On windows, mac, linux: HTC Vive (best tracking and compatible with Pimax and knuckle controller), Occulus Rift (better controller but all tracking cameras direct connection to usb-ports on your pc) Roomscale (you can move in your room and in VR): Windows Mixed Reality, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift Look around on youtube for vr and 2018. There are some helpful infos about the systems.

vranimeted

hmmm, do the releases work on MR out the box? You modding or sticking with 2D?

vranimeted

Cardboard is a good entry point. Some places even give those away. And there will be more video stuff incoming.

vranimeted

Ah yea, I forgot about PSVR (won't happen again). You get video content on it fairly easily?

vranimeted

It won't ever be a VR exclusive. I know there are some of you desktop folks keeping track, so I've tried to focus on releasing stuff you guys can enjoy as well.

vranimeted

Yup, right now I'm using a separate NonVR camera with keyboard controls and stripping the VR connection for the build, but working to put it all in one.

vranimeted

Yea def. depends on main use. I like them all for different reasons, though Im not quite on the WMR bandwagon yet. Maybe once I try the Odyssey it'll change my mind, but unless its REAL MR, I'll prob jump over them to the wireless versions when not using the Oculus/Vive.

vranimeted

damn...if it makes you feel any better I got the vive at 800 and the oculus at 600 lol, though that was before I went full on h dev

ShadowSteel18

Thanks. When I signed up I signed up because of your work of the RWBY girls. I had even downloaded the old POVs that would start with the gang dancing then cut to a room playing some Vocaliod Song as you "Made Love" to one of the RWBY Girls. I still have no idea what the Vocaloid Song was but I can't get it out of my head.

vranimeted

Sure thing. My passion is to bring these characters to life using this awesome technology that I saw the potential for from the moment I put on a headset. However I realize all the effort being put into adding that sense of realism in VR works on the desktop as well and while not as immersive can still be really enjoyable. I also really appreciate the interest and support, so taking the extra time to make something work outside of VR is the least I can do to show that appreciation. In the beginning I only made Vr content and from multiple requests I started the NonVR versions. So it's actually gone the opposite way of your initial concern lol.

Allex

Hey, thanks for the reply. Files from you and others on VRporn can be hit and miss. Sometimes they’ll work right after downloading and editing their file names to work with Littlstar, but other times I need to manually edit their h264 levels (whatever that is) to 5.1 using H264 level editor or they won’t display. Having said that, when I edit any of your videos to 5.1 the perspective looks really unnatural. I haven’t been able to really enjoy any of your recent work unfortunately.

vranimeted

Let's sidebar to figure out what's going on here, especially since I only have like 2 videos out and the rest are PC based VR and NonVR executables. I'm not familiar with littlstar, so I haven't been building in a way that is compatible with it, but I'd like to hear more about what you've been doing to view my content. Please shoot me a message on discord or here and we'll see what's going to work going forward even if it's a combination of the planned VR videos for PSVR and NonVR PC content.

Venom Rose

Ok, stupid question here. I'm not tech savvy but does the pricing on some of these models determine higher quality or is that just marketing. Also, do I need a high end PC to run the software or is that all in the gear itself? Thanks!

vranimeted

Not a stupid question at all. I did a break down quite some time ago and it's prob time for an update. They all do have different specs and have their own ideal use cases. They are also fairly appropriately priced. Best overall is the Vive to just into the deep end and you do need a high end computer for that. if you want a budget conscious choice, then mobile VR is the way to go. If you have a Vr ready phone, that's a decent way to go, if not then Oculus go is $200 and doesn't require a computer so it is currently the cheapest standalone option.

Venom Rose

Ah, That does help. Hmm I'll look more into the vive and see what is required for it, currently my pc is and alien-ware alpha i7 so i might have to do some serious upgrades for it. But the oculus Go is standalone huh, that might be the best choice for now. Thank you and your patrons for the helpful info.

vranimeted

np and the main thing to look at is the graphics card, I think GTX 1060 is the new minimum.

RubySoul

Dell Windows Mixed Reality here. Only bought it for $220. It surprisingly has high compatibility with Vive games, even if they never mention WMR compatibility (i'm assuming since they both use SteamVR). It also supports room scale, despite having no external sensors (as they are built in) and is essentially plug and play. Fairly satisfied with it so far.

vranimeted

Awesome! Glad to hear your WMR has been an enjoyable one. I'm still waiting for my chance to try the Odyssey.

Nes27

or you can go for the "Vive focus" which you don't a computer to run. It's a stand alone vr head set.

vranimeted

True the Vive Focus will be an interesting choice, though by the time it's released the whole list could be shifted.
