My thing with visual effects is. While it's improved so much over the years they get lazy and use it for everything. I never like it when they CGI people for fight scenes in movies vs using stunt people and doing choreographed fights. The same with physical monsters via make up artists vs CGI monsters. Harry Potter looked awesome because of knowing when to do it physical vs digital. Today they probably would do almost all of it digital. I haven't seen the fantastic beasts though to see how that looks.

Valid point, they definitely overdo it sometimes. Although they have their limits, I prefer made up monsters over CGI ones all day, just because they look more authentic. In movies today, they definitely need to work on having that healthy balance between CGI and real life

There’s only some visual effects in Harry Potter that don’t hold up from the first two movies mainly (the first HP movie had a big 20yr anniversary 2021), mostly these movies still look excellent today, and that comes from the use of so many practical effects and smart choices like the ones they explain in this video. And it’s so perfect because it’s such an immersive world in the books and the movies do such a good job of bringing that to life, and the visual effects is such a big part of that (along with the costumes, the sets, the acting, and so on)
