Hello!

Sometimes I get caught in a cycle of the same movies, books, activities, and whatever else. If you also suffer from this, I hope this small collection of recommendations can be of some help.

P.S. These are obviously just things I like and if you don’t like them too, then that’s absolutely a-okay ❤️

Movies/Series:

Boardwalk Empire:

I’m very late to the party on this one, but still happy I arrived all the same. 1920’s prohibition, smiling gangsters, and anti-villains galore! Its gritty, its fun, its satisfying like a good steak. I highly recommend sinking your teeth into this great series.

Young Sheldon:

My basic tastes are sated with this wholesome and surprisingly touching prequel to The Big Bang Theory. Young Sheldon follows nine year-old Sheldon Cooper and his family as they navigate day-to-day life. It’s simple, it’s calming and it has some really endearing characters. If you love slice-of-life entertainment, this one’s for you.

Cunk on Earth:

The Queen of modern mockumentaries! Follow Philomena Cunk as she asks the most burning of questions, such as “King Arthur came a lot, didn’t he?” and “which was more culturally significant the Renaissance or Single Ladies by Beyonce?”. It’s fun, it’s light, it’s a great one to watch with a meal. Nonsense humour at its finest! Tuck in.

Downton Abbey:

The theme this month for our entertainment is - comfort. And nothing gets more comfy than a bunch of period folk dealing with slight change. Downton Abbey follows the Crawley clan, an English aristocratic family and the people who serve them. Its gentle, its quaint, it’s as comfy as a fresh pair of slippers.

Music:

All These Things That I’ve Done - The Killers

Shake Your Groove Thing - Peaches & Herb

Shake the Frost - Tyler Childers

Cruel Summer - Taylor Swift

I Like to Move It - Real 2 Real

Burn Your Village - Kiki Rockwell

Til It Happens To You - Lady Gaga

Love Potion No. 9 - The Clovers

Activities:

Be Kind, Not Nice:

I’m all for being kind, showing people respect and decency, but I’m truly over being nice. I’m not nice, I’m kind. I don’t wish others harm, I get about my business and I help where I can. But that’s where it ends. I won’t tolerate emotional vampirism, harassment or nonsense. There’s no fucking around and there’s no finding out. Be kind, take care of your people and be decent. But do not suffer idiots in the service of ‘being nice’.

Have a BBQ:

Organise a small or big BBQ, invite friends and family, and just eat and chat. It’s relatively cheap, it’s wholesome and it can be a great opportunity for everyone to catch up. We had one last week and it was really cute.

Make Life Your Priority:

Just my take, but life shouldn’t be about work or stress or productivity. Yes, those things exist in life, but that’s not life’s purpose. So, truly, do what you gotta do, but don’t make it your focus. You can like your job, you can take pride in your work, but it’s not the whole of you. Be more cavalier about it. Don’t worry about it too much. And for heaven’s sake, don’t let it into your downtime. To quote a random lady on the internet I saw once, “I’m in it to finance the parts of my life that I actually like”.

Damn, that 'be kind, not nice' part really spoke to me. I've been taken advantage of in the past by being nice. Now, like you said, I don't suffer idiots by being too nice.

Yes. We are conditioned to be polite and nice so early on, and honestly, it takes such a long time to unlearn. Be kind, be decent, but don't let people sap you of energy and time. It's your time. No one else's. You don't owe anyone smiles or affection or anything besides basic respect that you'd show to any stranger. Take care, lovely.

Philomena Cunk has done more to heal my depression than any alcohol, self destructive thought patterns and terrifying therapy could ever do. And I also emotionally resonate with a woman who bursts into tears upon finding out nueclear weapons exist.

That historian is hilarious. The contrast between them is amazing. Also, it's such a sweet and wholesome moment :)

A BBQ for me would just be me cooking outside and eating alone 😭😭😭

TeacupAudio

That could be quite nice, but I know what you mean. Make your alone time as pleasant as possible, lovely :)

Cunk on Earth is gold, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Young Sheldon.
