Yo, Teacups!

If you haven’t seen one of these posts before, this is just what it says on the tin - a recommendations post. Sometimes I get caught in a cycle of the same movies, books, activities, and whatever else. If you also suffer from this, I hope this small collection of recommendations can be of some help.

P.S. These are obviously just things I like and if you don’t like them too, then that’s absolutely a-okay ❤️

January is a new beginning for us all. So, let’s kick things off with some fresh media and ways to spend our downtime.

Series:

The Ricky Gervais Show:

If you haven’t seen this absolute gem, I cannot recommend it enough. Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and the little round-headed buffon that is Karl Pilkington, will keep you entertained for hours. With charming animation, gentle rambling, and some of the most amazing belly laughs. An old favourite for a reason.

I Am Not Okay With This:

Ever felt odd, and not in the cute way? Sydney does. A lot. Struggling with grief, teenage turbulence and confusing feelings, Syd is encouraged to keep a diary to document her inner turmoil. Unfortunately, that inner turmoil isn’t staying all that inner. Telekinesis, grey characters, and an amazingly talented cast. It’s a short, entertaining ode to everyone who’s ever felt “I am not okay with this”.

Atypical:

We have autism in my family, and it’s been really great to find a show that gives it nuance. Because autism does have nuance. Atypical follows Sam and his family through the trials and tribulations of everyday life, examining how whether you’re neurotypical or neurodivergent, life is tricky. It’s a gentle, but felt story about how everyone is usually just trying their best.

Heartstopper:

One for the romantics! Heartstopper is an absolutely adorable story about young love, fitting in, and finding the people who make all the confusion of life easier. Follow Charlie as he navigates his growing feelings for popular boy Nick. It’s sweet, it’s soft, it’ll have you giggling like the little fan girl you are deep down.

Movies:

The Banshees of Inisherin:

A strange film all about what happens when your lifelong friend suddenly says they don’t like you anymore. A black comedy that line steps between humour and tragedy. Definitely an interesting watch. I’m still unsure how I feel about the film in general, but I would definitely still recommend it. Also, it has a donkey called Jenny, so that’s adorable.

Activities:

Prioritise Sleep:

Yes, that boring thing we tend to neglect. I know it’s not exactly the most exciting prospect for all of us, but I honestly love getting ready for bed. I’ve managed to get my sleep back up to snuff over the last few weeks, and I have definitely seen an improvement in my general mood. I’m not saying you have to think about it obsessively, just go to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual, brush your teeth, wash your face, and get comfy.

Keep Your Boundaries:

If you’re anything like me, saying no to people can feel painful. You feel like you’re letting them down, that you’re not a good person, that if you were really decent, you’d step up and suffer the uncomfortableness. But the thing is, none of that is true.

Yes, we do occasionally have to step-up for the ones we love and care about, but if it’s a constant and we neglect our own boundaries and needs, resentment will set in. And having love slowly turn into dislike is something we absolutely need to avoid. Unless, they’re an irredeemable asshole, then cut ‘em loose. But you get my point. Set those perimeters, try to be as authentic as possible, and know that it is much better to say no, than say yes and slowly start to hate the people you care about.

Make a Look Forward to List:

Ever felt like you’re just chugging along? Like there’s no markers breaking up work and monotony? Well, then, you might benefit from making a “Look Forward to List”. Fill it with the trivial and big a like. So far I have a charity race, my friend coming down at the end of March, my Yurt venture in April, and giving blood in June.

You can type it on your phone or print it out. Just put somewhere you’ll see it everyday. It’s another simple way to practice gratitude, set goals, and help foster a positive outlook.

Music:

Buzzkill - Baby Queen

People Pleaser - Cat Burns

Pointless - Lewis Calpaldi

Heart - flor

Woman - Doja Cat

Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus

Flowers - Miley Cyrus

Escapism - RAYE, 070 Shake

Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!) - Blu Cantrell

And that’s my humble offer, guys. Stay safe, drink water and get some rest.

All the best,

Tea

I have a mental “Look Forward to List” but actually writing it down and putting it somewhere I see every day just might be the difference between feeling ok and feeling good. Thank you for a nugget of wisdom.
