Hello!

Sometimes I get caught in a cycle of the same movies, books, activities, and whatever else. If you also suffer from this, I hope this small collection of recommendations can be of some help.

P.S. These are obviously just things I like and if you don’t like them too, then that’s absolutely a-okay ❤️

TV Shows/Movies:

Austin (2024):

An author’s life is turned upside down when a neurodivergent man turns up claiming to be his son. The main character is played by Michael Theo, an autistic man who also appeared in the reality show Love on the Spectrum. It’s so refreshing seeing more nuanced and complete depictions of different kinds of people and experiences. Heartfelt, charming and very soothing for the soul. This show is a pleasant surprise from start to finish.

Ponyo (2008):

A feast for the eyes and a tale as old as time - boy meets fish girl and promises to love her forever and ever. With animation that makes you believe you’re in a dream, quirky characters and child-like wonder - Ponyo is a playful story about love, hope and helping your fellow man and fish.

A Sign of Affection (2024):

An anime that is equal parts adorable, aesthetic and charming. Based on the manga of the same name, A Sign of Affection follows our deaf protagonist Yuki as she forms a relationship with the handsome and sensitive Itusomi. This is a wonderfully comfy anime filled with adorable moments, character introspection and healthy depictions of disabled characters navigating friendship, romance and everyday life. The two main characters are very relatable - down to their anxieties, hang-ups and shining qualities. You will absolutely fall in love with this couple and their story.

Big Daddy (1999):

As much a comfort as it is a tear-jerker, Big Daddy is the story of Sunny, a loveable but useless layabout, who adopts a little boy in order to show his girlfriend he’s responsible. The plot sounds ridiculous and on paper it is - but the performances and charm of the two main actors pull it all together. This cheesy but charming film captures that universal truth that so many of us just want a good dad to love and protect us.

Homeward Bound (1993):

A family goes on vacation, leaving their three pets behind. The pets mistakenly think they’ve been abandoned and set out to reunite with their family. This is a classic comfort movie: talking animals, 90’s music, and big fat happy ending. The reunion scene always makes me bawl. It doesn’t matter that I’m thirty. It doesn’t matter that I know it’s a film - it just always makes me so happy to see Shadow and Peter reunited.

Books:

We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer

If a family of strangers showed up at your door, asking to look around their old childhood house, what would you do? Me personally, I wouldn’t have even opened the door, but then we wouldn’t have much of a story. An eerie exploration of anxiety, family and shame - slow and creepily building like many a classic horror. A fantastic read now that Autumn is just a few weeks away. Yes, I am excited for the basic bitch to fully take over my body. No, I will not apologise.

Music:

(I Just) Died in Your Arms  - Hidden Citizens

Pink Pony Club - Chappell Roan

I Had Some Help - Post Malone (Feat. Morgan Wallen)

Man in Finance (G6 Trust Fund) - Girl on Couch, Billen Ted

Trouble - Pink

Numb - Skylar Grey, Tommee Profitt

Zombie - Miley Cyrus

Situations - Nicolina

West Coast - Lana Del Rey

Activities:

Hacking (Non-competitive Horse Riding):

Find some place that allows you to ride their horses and just go for a quaint little hack. It is so relaxing and freeing - you just go, they hitch you up to a fellow rider and you plod along on your little horse and you just experience sunlight and trees and not being in front of a screen. And this is not me hating on screens. I love screens, I love media, I love the internet. But I also love having time away from all that too.
