Everyone but Lois asks him the same question.

They see he can go anywhere, do anything, and they ask him why this? Why the cape and the letter S and a name that isn’t his own as his only posesssions? Why not live in the most luxurious mansion? Why not have the most beautiful women? Why not eat the finest lobster and drink the finest wine and dress like men who other men see as powerful?

Clark asks himself the same thing. Not because he’s tempted, but he wants to know why so many people are wondering the same thing about him. Are they wondering about themselves? Are they wondering about the future? Are they just trying to get him to make sense, because they can believe he can fly faster than a bullet and lift more than a ton and see through walls, but they can’t fathom that he doesn’t hate?

Then someone needs his help. Someone always needs his help. He’s not always there to give it, but he always wants to be.

And when they know they’re safe—when they know Superman is there and Superman means safe—he knows why he isn’t in the most luxurious mansion, with the most beautiful women, eating the finest lobster.

How could it be better than this?
