We've seen all the trainees and their potential. What do we think? Did they choose the right ones for the benefit?

Btw, intro includes just some of my quick thoughts on the new SM BG, RIIZE.

I have 5 favorites too TT... I like the top 5 hahah they are my picks as of these 2 episodes. TBH I expected more from these trainees because they are joining a 7 year group who is known for amazing talent and stage presence.. all these trainees even the 2 smrookies look unprepared in my opinion. Also I hate the format with this whole just showing dance, singing, or rapping. They are an idol group so the first performance should've been more of what the the 2 maknaes did with chewing gum(my favorite performance of this round). Overall I hope they are given more guidance and we get to see them grow as the show goes on.

To be honest, so far the only one I'm liking is Anderson, and the team that rapped and sang

annsavreh26

I don't know if you know but Ryu is Filipino-Japanese and his brother is a very popular Jpop artist Alan Shirahama :)

pup_kay43

So far my favorite are Anderson, riku, Ryu and Ryo. I like the show so far and how much I agree with everything the judges said. The only thing I don't particularly agree with is Ryu's ranking but I guess that's bc they are choosing based on who fits yushi and Sion's vibe more so I guess it fine plus it's still just basically an introduction and tge first out of 4-5 rankings to come.

For RIIZE, I didn't wanna choose a bias right away before seeing the full potential of the group (ofc I know they're good since SungTaro are already there). But oh man, Wonbin... such a flower boy, he's giving the standard SM visual. On top of knowing how to play a guitar, I think he's also in the dance line since he choreographed the IG dance with Shotaro and he was mostly in the center too. Thanks for reacting to this! TBH, I don't think I'd be able to keep up with the show if I wasn't watching it with you. I don't think it's making enough noise, at least on my side of stan Twitter lol. I feel like more people are excited about RIIZE's debut. I really liked the Chewing Gum boys, although I would prefer if they debuted later/a little bit older.

Laurelle

Thank you for reacting to this Jeff! You are the reason I am watching this show apart from Key lol. I did not watch the video yet, but I just wanted to talk about the timing of this show. I think sm chose an awful time to air this show as 1-although I am not a nctzen, I still know a lot of people were upset about sungtaro and rookies not being in nct tokyo anymore; 2-The hype and excitement are focused on RIIZE, so the enthusiasm for a new unit is not really there; 3-the pilot was not great enough to make people want to look forward to the rest of the show; 4-there is no voting, even if I prefer the judges choosing, voting done by the public definitely helps in engaging fans into choosing favorites and working hard to make sure their fav makes it. I just find it sad because these boys worked hard for it and they deserve a great debut. I always say sm has the most precious gems in the industry but do not know how to use them lol...sorry for my long comment hahaha

jeffavenue

i was thinking that too but given with what i saw for boys planet and other produce shows, the change during and after the show can be really drastic. but yes, i was expecting the two fixed ones to come out of the gate being as good as taeyong 😂

jeffavenue

yes i thought same, riize is more viral. i think also cause the new nct unit removed sungtaro so lots are boycotting

jeffavenue

so true. the timing is really bad. i feel like they should’ve debut riize first and then did this show in the fall when people are not out doing summer things. also nct nation is supposed to happen this month so nctzens are gonna be occupied too.

Laurelle

yes, exactly! And also it might only be my opinion, but I believe sm should have kept the nct expansion within 3-4 years of the group debut. NCT debuted 7 years ago so it'll be very hard for these trainees to be at the same level. Also, there is already an established fandom and people are usually more open to supporting new groups than accepting new members in a group they follow for some reason I can't explain lol

Star Galaxy

Yeah, I personally think they could've just made RIIZE the new NCT subunit and stopped there. Then they should've just made these new trainees debut under a new separate group. I think Riize would fit well with the NCT brand visual and talent wise, not to mention they wouldn't have had to remove SungTaro and anger everyone. Although at the same time, I can already see that RIIZE is already showing some group flavor/color cohesion so I think they would fare really well outside the shadows of the NCT brand.

My Favorite so far is Jungmin bc like you said he really have kinda the same vibe with haechan and I love his voice.

eve_ss

OMG we literally got the same picks!! I like those 5 too! HAHA *ANDERSON - He's a stand out! Love his confidence. Very natural on stage. Great perfomer. His dancing is good. and he's got the most neo vibe out of all them I feel like. 👏🏻 *JUNGMIN - I like his voice! and his personality. He's awkward but also fun person I feel like. HAHA He's so cuteee! 🥰 * RYU - (If I ain't got you guy) So I found out that he's actually an EXPG graduate - same with Shotaro - it's a highly elite school in Japan from what I've heard and so lots of good trainees went from there. No wonder he's good. I love his voice the most. His growth in a short period of time is impressive also. Oh and he's also half-Filipino! ❤ * RIKU - I see a lot of potential. His rap is good! Just lacking with some dynamics like what you've mentioned as well. and he's got presence too. Looking forward to see his dance! I hope he's good 🙏🏻 * RYO - omg he's so cuteeee! Very stable singer. He's so young but he's already that good. I love his smile. ☺ I feel like a proud parent whenever I see him. HAHA mygad I feel so old. Thank you so much for the reaction! So happy to see someone who had the same sentiments and reaction about the show. 💚

TBH, altho we see lots of potential, but because we saw how NCT as trainees too and they were all so good already right off the bat so my expectation were actually high for these trainees. They still have lots to improve on. The talent is there no doubt they have some good vocalists and dancer trainees here but they still need more training. Well, it was filmed early this year so after few months I think we can see lots of improvement when they finally debut. I'm sure SM would not let them debut if they're not ready yet. So I'm really looking foward to that. Also, maybe they don't fit NCT image (yet) -- to be fair NCT been there for 7 years so it's really hard to catch up -- but I think this group will fit into the japanese market well. They're very youthful. Japanese market is different from Korea or China. So I think this group would work still. I think they'll have a bright youthful concept for their debut. Just my guess. Lastly, I really like the judging here, the judges were being truthful with the comments and constructive criticisms but not too harsh. They don't just comment they actually gave the trainees very helpful tips and advices. Next mission I feel like will be very good. So excited to see them perform as a group. My expectation is still high. I have trust in them. 🙏🏻

For LaStart : i feel those 6 guys like you said have so much diversity . Language and talent / specialty especially. For me i just here to just watch with you and not anticipating much of whoever gonna debut in the future. For RIIZE : I dont have any particular bias YET but im glad that all of them are at least adult .

miri

My final 6 as of now would be: Yushi, Sion, Jungmin, Sakuya, Ryo, and either between Ryu/Riku Really liked Jungmin and Sakuya's tone and Yushi's dancing. Can't wait for them to show more of their capabilities 'cause they will improve over time. Really curious about Yushi and Sion's vocal/rap too. PS. Will Yushi and Sion be joining every performances for us to see who fit with them the most (since they're the fixed members)? If so, gosh, the training and pressure they needed to go through though.

Deiseree

I agree with a lot of the comments above. The standard was so high that all these trainees even the chosen rookies were not there YET for me. Honestly, I’m not sure if 3 more rounds of performances will be able to convince me, but I’ll keep watching with you to find out. I also agree with the comment that their focus will be the Japanese market so their vibe will be slightly different, but I still don’t see them fitting into the NCT concept as a whole. But, I’m excited to see their growth. If they can show progress in such a short amount of time and convince us that deserve to be in NCT then I’ll gladly welcome them as an NCTzen. Also agree with the comments praising the judges. I too like all the constructive criticisms and tips we’re getting from them. These are the types of comments we’ve been begging to see in many of the survival shows before.

jeffavenue

tbf i think they intended to do it sooner given all the rumours but i’m sure covid had a lot to do with the delay. japan was very closed up during covid so it didn’t make sense to launch a new group during that time :(

aerizennies

Did you noticed on that EXO trainee photo's concept there's JOHNNY ? 😂

Syah Riza

between good at singing but stiff or good at movement but bad at singing, I think I would probably choose good at singing but stiff because movement can be trained in maybe short time but vocal is really hard to train especially when you didn't have any basic.. I have my friend who go to vocal class but end up give up because he said it is hard when you don't know how to control you voice.

kimjoycotton

19:20 got me weezing on the floor

kimjoycotton

Uh my top bet is ryo as of now. The smstan in him on top of his performance is rly doing it for me. U never go wrong with a pink blood idol

kimjoycotton

Harutas dancing too. I like the delicate but not necessarily stiff looking type of dancing.

kimjoycotton

And heitetsu... he may lack on the performancr aspect but i can see n feel his passion in a way...

kimjoycotton

My personal top 4s far different from the top 4 for this mission but i kinda get it

Matt Vesliño

On RIIZE: I'm also super excited! Still a little devastated that Shohei is going to be missing out on it due to health issues, but overall very pumped for them! I don't know where I heard this from (might be speculation, so I'm unsure!), but I think their concept is gearing toward pop rock / punk rock? I think it's aided with Anton's composing and Wonbin's guitar skills? So I'm actually looking forward to how their sound might be! SungSho are still very much my ults, but depending on Sohee's skills, he's already creeping up there LOL 🤩

Matt Vesliño

To your question about stability and lacking stage presence vs. fierce but unstable: Ultimately, I'm listening to music before watching the performances for it. If I'm going to stream your song because I like it, I have to like your vocal ability first before your performance ability. Both are important for sure, but if I had to pick, I'd much rather have a stiff performer with top-tier vocals than someone who dances like nobody's business but can barely hold a note.

Matt Vesliño

I would say my Top 4 right now is Riku, Ryu, Ryo, and Anderson in that order. I like Jungmin too and his vocal tone is super unique, but I think out of just the fact that this will ultimately be NCT's Japan-oriented unit, I'd swap him out for Ryu who also has a great tone and tons of potential to improve. I think the other trainees right now are just a little bit more timid than I'd like, but that could just be nerves, and the chemistry with each other hadn't fully blossomed quite yet. Of course, there's still lots of show left for them to grow, so I'm still excited!

Atikah

Its okay! I also think Jungmin gives Haechan vibes. I personally cannot get over how SION has Jaehyun vibes. He looks like Jaehyun when he was an smrookies (i hope i dont offend valentines) and Anderson is so likeable. I can see him in NCT. I feel so nervous for all of them. Im invested now.

tada dadam

before the show aired, i was like “i’m not gonna support minors, what was sm thinking…” BUT😆 i enjoyed their performance the most😭

tada dadam

jungmin gives me haechan vibes, ryo renjun and sion jaehyun vibes, especially when he is just slightly smiling without showing teeth, but when smiles openly and wide, he looks like eunseok

annsavreh26

Not gonna lie SM Vocalists are top-tier!

cabbi02

i feel like its an unpopular opinion, but id much rather have good voices with meh stage presence. i mean, im listening to music more than im watching any performances anyway, and in live concerts, im usually bias wrecked by the best live singers. im honestly shocked i see so little about minjae because, if he were to join nct, he’d immediately be one of the top vocalists in the group. i associate so much of the nct sound, and sm sound overall, with interesting instrumentals combined with, and sometimes even in competition with, strong vocals. if this group were to shift into more performance based instead of strong vocals, what will set them apart from every other group out there?

Morklee

JUNGMIN is my favorite too, he is giving me haechan and taeil vibes like weird but funny 😂

Darllyn L.

I just can't help but think that after this show, Jisung won't be the Maknae of NCT anymore 😅

annsavreh26

True! And I can't wait to see Jisung's reaction too. He always gets flustered whenever he hears his juniors call him "Sunbaenim" or "Hyung" so that would be fun to see lol

skzlover

i also had the same picks as the judges rankings lol, for me in order of my favorites from this first mission is anderson first, jungmin second, and riku third.
