PS. Patreon finally has a fucking video upload feature free until end of 2023 😭 I'm gonna try this so let me know how you guys like it! I'm no longer using Vimeo cause that site has cost me $16,000 per year for the last two years. Dropbox seems great but it'd be nice if we can keep it in here :)

so excited to have you back! don't feel pressured to catch up with everything right away, take your time. lovely to see your face again :D

Wedemboyz scoring that low even though alot of people liked it actually caused a controversy. Boa was heavily criticized. I really enjoyed Mbitios because they brought so many street genres like breaking, tutting and krumping. To be honest Justjerk was just amazing. The thing with YGX is that the dancers that weren’t helping were not extra dancers, but members of the YGX crew. Also everyone watching the episode appreciated Mike Songs takes and judgements. Everyone wanted him to stay for the rest of the episodes because the judgements were better than the official judges.

thank u! i’m so excited to see everything but yes i promise i won’t burn myself out ☺️😂

ok good cause when i was editing i was like maybe i overpraised wedemboyz? but i’m glad everyone else loved it too! i think this batch is SOLID. thanks for telling me about ygx. it’s weird it came across as that they’re helpers. probably just the translation.

For Justjerk part, I think why young j doing a lot of “interference” , first is because Minseo & Hulk are all his students in the past. (Esp. Minseo was justjerk academy student) Although they are all JJ Crew now, but they are more like Teacher-Student( Except Jho& Sone). And The Leader in this mission is called” Main Director” , the other director is chosen by the Leader. (based on the rule) it means that The leader is the one being responsible for the whole performance. The Mission have such short time to prepare, in my Opinion, if allowed, of course yj want to give them space to do everything they want. But, The leader has such big pressure to make sure that their team won’t be eliminated, it’s not just a performance… he has the responsibility to keep “Justjerk Title“ because he is the leader of the group. And i think those” digidigidi “ stuff that nowadays represent to Justjerk, is because of Young-J dancing and direct style. Therefore, due to the editing, it looks like yj has such authoritarian (? leadership, but from my perspective he is just seeing the problem of Hulk & Minseo choreography, and it will be more effective to quickly fix it when it’s just at practice. He knows that they will be sad that he change so much things, but he can’t just “let it go”, because he have to point out and make the performance better. (Sorry for my bad Eng😅 And I respect Jeff your opinion. But As a JJ fans, i want to say sth that I observe🥹) Welcome for your comeback!

First part I want to convey is that Young-J is not just a leader but teacher of them in reality. And if you see more jj stuff, you will know Young-J is such a great teacher to his students and treat his member in reality like brothers.🥺 But as a Fan , we all admit that Young-J has such “stubborn “ personality, esp for dancing🤣

This is out of context but The Choom channel released behind scene videos when the crews performed on mnet stage, and to my surprise, everybody loved Ingyo, like they were giving him so much love. It made me realize that they were portraying him like the bad guy, but I think he is just a joker.

The theme song is on Spotify, Jeff.. all of them on my everyday playlist now

i feel like people who have done competitions would agree that wdbz was... okay? it was just really apparent that they have never made competitive choreo before. they didn't make as much use of the numbers they had and there was really little staging involved, mostly just transitions and formations. for example, you pointed out how you didn't really get why the judges were praising minseo for the formation with jinjo crew, but it was less about the formation itself and more about how he found a way to make the entire picture more complete, whereas vata had a LOT of moments in his choreography where one group of dancers was completely still while the others danced. vata's piece in general was really empty, and considering the song isn't completely jam packed with moments either, him staging the choreo the way he did made it all seem really slow paced and monotonous imo. only thing id agree on is that vata shouldve been higher than kamel since kamel's section didn't really have much going on and was pretty repetitive throughout the whole thing, and it wasnt clean either. ingyu's part too, it was definitely the best but i wish he did more with the staging because it ended up still being underwhelming. to explain more about just jerk though is that after they went somewhat mainstream in 2016 they kind of developed a new system so they function more as a company and school...? so rather than a simple audition it's a long term process of kids enrolling in private group classes by just jerk members (they learn foundational basics, body conditioning, and even dance history), get assigned private mentors from the crew, they get evaluated by just jerks directors, etc. so it's a very teacher-student dynamic! youngj is also one of the pioneers for the korean choreo scene (him, lia kim, and girin jang are the ones i can think of off the top of my head) and is largely responsible for the korean choreography community to have become as big as it is right now, so its kind of just a universally accepted fact among korean dancers that when it comes to directing, he knows how to do it the most efficiently. i think he wouldnt have been as nitpicky if this was an exhibition performance, but since its a competition and theyre short on time, he probably felt more pressure to fix things as they go.

no worries! we welcome conversations and opinions! the teacher-student relationship makes sense so i see why there’s the authoritative tone to it. i didn’t know that but it makes a lot of sense in this context. but with that said, i think then young j would maybe need to shift that mindset as they are his colleagues now. but i totally get the pressure hanging on his head. it was very convenient and smart of him to correct the improvements during the practice as it does take time 👍🏽 i honestly don’t mind the interference, just the delivery of the words 🥺 but as we know editing can be evil. maybe it wasn’t at all bad haha

jeffavenue

ya, ryu.d from auspicious whom i interviewed is a friend of ingyoo too. the more we learn about them the more we realize that mnet evil editing will always be there 🥲

jeffavenue

what really? good for jackson! ya i wish mike becomes like a permanent judge or something next time 😂

you can search with the keyword “street man fighter original vol.4” ☺️

thanks for this as it’s always so interesting to learn about the inception of dance and choreography in south korea! another commenter above talked about the student-teacher dynamic. i didn’t know that and it totally makes sense now. i don’t mind the interference in the direction just how the messages were relayed. but like you said there is a lot of pressure. ya wedemboyz’s choreo definitely wasn’t conventional competition piece that’s probably why i kinda liked it still 😂 but when it’s this different, that’s gonna be subjective in terms of entertainment value. by difficulty level, 100% i agree with you.

As a viewer without any dancing background though, I appreciated WDBZ and JJ performances more and even EODDAE. Since majority of the dances seems hiphop based and they invited breakdancers, it felt like eating a variation of the same dish and after a while you dont appreciate it anymore after the first few bites cause you're sick of it. I loved how the story flows and creative WDBZ was and EODAE too felt so different compared to the rest of the performances. If JJ wasn't several levels higher in quality and showmanship, I would've lumped them with the others too cause they have the same recipe but they just went further with it sooo much compared to the other crews that its nothing short of amazing. I honestly can't remember much about the other crews but the brain tends to remember shocking and entertaining performances so I only repeatedly watch JJ and WDBZ crew videos. I do have the same opinion on the JJ leading/teaching that was shown. I think it could've been delivered better and I wish that was evil editing or mistranslation and not really YJ saying that they need to accept his direction immediately rather than discussing it. Remember, he's the "stubborn mule" who wouldn't give in to Prime Kingz on the BTS song and it led them to 2-3 hours (if I remember correctly) going back and forth just to decide who would get Part B song. The teachers are suppose to let the students grow on their own and part of that is making mistakes rather than telling them how their suppose to do their work. I guess it's altogether different if JJ crew has more like a military culture and dynamic where they have to be uniform all the time and that the big boss should always be followed and that wad agreed upon by all the members when they joined.

For JJ, in the commentary YoungJ said that if its a normal practice, he usually say his feedback after the performance and probably. discuss it, but since in SWF, the given days to prepare was REALLY SHORT that if he has to change something, he'd do it right away. But one good thing about YoungJ is that he always talk to his members and explain everything... The thing is, everyone expected the 1st gen justjerk (S.one and JHo) to be the directors but he gave chance to the maknae and Hulk for them to improve or have an experience. AND THEY DON'T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE on MEGA CREW or handling a lot of people, so they really needed Youngj
