PLEASE READ: This reaction is almost 3.5 HOURS long. I swear I'm not trying to beat Avatar or the Titanic here lol. As per usual, I gave my thoughts after each performances. And then BEFORE I watched the expert and self evaluation results, I took another look at the FULL VER. of the performances on Youtube which you guys will see here too. After that, I talked about my ranking and reasons for those placements. I used a criteria (4 elements) to determine my ranking to be as unbiased as possible. Finally, I resumed the broadcast on Viki to see how my ranking compared to the actual results.

ngl so far this is the episode i wanted you to react to the most so far! looking forward to your breakdown and personal evaluation. I want to see how much so I line up with you at the end of it all ^_^ (will update once I finish watching with my personal breakdown as a fellow performer as well!)

Erley

An article was released today that stated that the judges had no clue about the budget issue which explains why the groups with the more elaborate stages ranked higher unfortunately. MNET has stated that they will remove the budget limitations for all groups. Hopefully the next episodes everyone is the same playing field. This show has started off bad from jump.

Omayma

Okay so I'm not gonna watch yet coz I have things to do but I was too curious so I had to check your ranking. And Jeff I just wanna say I love you lmao coz I also feel validated by you help what kind of inception djsbdh anyway we have the same top 3 I know I told you I was gonna be unbiased and then told you that I was gonna gave up but after the ep both my biased & unbiased rankings at least the top 3 were the same- Anyway so seeing that we have the same top 3 relieved me in a way..

Omayma

One of the reasons why SF9's performance is >>> for me. I'm still traumatized at the grp's voting.

LisMM

Rankings on my end: 👑Ateez (89%) - SKZ (82%) - SF9 (74%) - The Boyz (68%) - BTOB (67%) - iKON (60%) What the oh so official Lis Rankings are based off of : 【Vocals+ Rap】 how much was live and how it good sounded 【Storyline】 was it interesting and did it translate well into the performance 【2x Song Arrangement】 Did the original song get elevated to another level (Wonderland NEEDs to be used as a soundtrack for a pirate movie now lol and NoN orchestra version was beautiful. V/S “No Air” RIP fr, I was SAAAALTEY they changed the drop so much, it completely took away the original x-factor that made the original so good 😔) and how well did the songs mesh together if it was a mashup. (The perfect transition between Side Effects X God’s menu 🤯 v/s the literal fade out between Killing Me X Love Scenario😬) 【2x Choreography】 visual layers, the formations, how interesting were they? how did they go when paired with the camera work? was it clean? did it fit the song ? How intricate was it? etc. 【Costume design + Makeup】how well did it match the theme and potentially accentuate choreo and how well did it look on the members aesthetically 👀 【Set Design】 How well did it fit the theme and frame the performance 【Acting】 facial expressions , body language, the ability to embody a character (Like Wooseok the Legend from RTK) 【Creativity】How innovative/clever were the group’s ideas that wereused in the performance (can influence anything from arrangement to choreo to set+costume design etc.) Tbh I actually typed out a full six page document in the Notes app and scored each of the groups in these categories X/10, and then worked out the percentages. (Good Lord I’m such a Nerd 😳) I’ll dump some screenshots in the discord later if I remember to. I got way too carried away with the analysis fr. 😂 I was actually kinda surprised at the rankings that came out. It was super fun to do. 😁 In short on this episode’s performances: SF9 - I genuinely thought that the see through mirror idea was so damn cool and I loved the more smooth glidey choreo approach. A leeetle bit too much walking in the end but I’ll forgive them ‘cause they have nice backs so I didn’t mind lmao. And the interaction with the female backup dancers was prrretty awesome. RIP to Jaeyoon’s leg tho. Ik he could have taken it easy, but on the other hand I totally understand his stubbornness, not wanting to let the team down and also not wanting to give up on something that you’ve put so much work into, I’ve been like that in the past and quite frankly really regretted it later (back problems are no joke ppl), kinda getting Chaerok vibes ngl lol. (Navillera gang if u know u know) 질렀어 finally being used with the double meaning “Jealous” was super satisfyyying. It’s one of the most misheard kpop lyrics ever. I did miss the original choreo and drop from the chorus a bit, The elbow triangle thingie+ the v formation and the little wookie wookie sound that comes after that. However the newly arranged version of the song sounded really good too. I liked the Dark Orchestra vibes it gave me. ATEEZ - The way Hongjoong came in... “AAALL EYES ON ME NOW” so hecking good. 🥲 I absolutely adore the fact that they included easter eggs from their MV storylines (Shady hat dude, the hourglass etc. ) and have really totally immersed themselves in the over-arking pirate concept of their albums. Honestly that’s storytelling to the next level. The classical sampling fit so damn well with Wonderland yet was like a match destined by fate. Everything about the performance was over-the-top and crazy like a musical in the bestest way possible. (Except for the Bone Breaking dancers lol, like why were they even there, were they supposed to resemble Skeletons or Jellyfish? 😅) The storyline was super clear, the dance was hella on point and the live vocals really made me proud to be their fan. ^^ The way they were so elated after coming off stage too. Bless them. They really have given some of the best reactions during kingdom so far. Seonghwa practically crying while watching BTOB was my favourite. And their reactions to the ranking as well. Yunho spoke so humbly and respectfully. They seriously deserved that first place. SKZ- the mirrored choreo with Chan and that backup dancer 👁👄👁 Upside Down is that you?!!😂 SKZ performance felt really well thought out, the song arrangement was super impressive and the way the roles flipped around from team Dark on top to team Light on top was pretty damn cool as well. I did however feel like SKZ kinda got lost from your sight in some scenes, as in, the focus wasn’t on them since there was too much going on around them. Especially in the “Standing on the table like in Dionysus (it’s true don’t come for me lol) while dudududu-ing” scene. They were completely lost in the background of that shot. I also felt like their performance lacked energy somehow? Ik that sounds weird considering the songchoice and everything, how do I explain it. It somehow felt like they weren’t completely into it?? Idk. That’s just the vibe I was getting. ^^ They were still crazy good tho so I placed them at no. 2 Just a small pet peeve of mine but I actually really don’t like how global voting takes up such a large proportion of the scores. The difference in fandom size and activity is way too big for that to honestly work fairly. 😕 And RIP to Fantasy and SF9. The guys looked so damn hurt when receiving 0 vites during the peer voting. 😭 That must have been soul crushing. I really feel like it would have been better if they performed 4th. After SKZ and ATEEZ being all 🏴‍☠️💣⚔️🐙 and 🔔⛓😈🐺, their performance was going to feel way more underwhelming than it would have if it had gone before the two.

Sakura

I know what I'm gonna watch tonight 🤣 thanks

EZDC

I also heard some classical added in SKZ' performance -- the part where Chan sang w/ the upside down dancer

Thank you for sparing me the hassle of choosing a movie to watch. *grabs popcorns

Erley

Since there is so much here I think I'll just add as I go. I really enjoyed the fade out from LS to Killing me. It fits the theme is slow dying love. It wouldn't have worked if it stuck out too much. They were telling a sad love story and it worked for me.

LisMM

When you pulled out your phone with Never Say Goodbye... Made my freaking day. I love that song so much ^^

claireisuche

Ateez did that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think watching kingdom needs to only focus on the interactions..The boys are whipped for one another.. they all are extremely talented.

Anonymous

I think i'll stop watching kingdom. This show is a mess.

doyoung's hat

i love all performances!!!! so good to see i enjoyed all of them a lot but if i do the ranking omg... 1. ateez. for sure i love everything was on point! and im huge fan of pirate concept it was so grand and epic love the energy 2. sf9. i love the most is the mood of the performance and partner work they really ate the sexy concept 3. btob. my weakness is the traditional culture thing and vocals i love it and arrangement was so good 4. the boyz. it was very artsy and musical i thought it looked like a whole theater 5. stray kids. i love the storytelling it was very clear and good, 6. ikon it was funky at first then it was so hype i love that overall i wanna put all groups at first place because the ranking doesn't mean nothing it's just the format like if you at 6 place that's not to tend that you are suck you are great it's just the rules! nowadays in kpop there such a lack of interactions and with these kinda shows they bring me back... in the past there was so much shows like where you can see idols interacting without the amount of dating rumors or like this idol hate that idol i missing on these so much so i dont know why fans are not wanna see show like this because until the queendom there was nothing similar to this so i love that thanks Jeff for great reaction and congrats your sister ❤️

Morag

Ateez was definitely First Place. Amazing performance overall. I was a bit upset at SF9 getting NO peer votes (i can understand how that could happen. It was still disappointing though); but I appreciated that the judges placed them Fourth.

Morag

IKON performance really stuck with me. It was very much like watching a musical. On a sidenote: Learning to read Hangul is fairly easy. It takes less than a day and has about the same amount of letters as english (not including the doubled letters).

EZDC

Thank you for loving SF9's performance. Putting them at #3 gives my heart a little at peace but it also makes me angry because I really want them to know that their stage was not 'not impactful', it was beautiful. Really

Anonymous

I feel like sf9 could have done better if all the members could have practiced has a group, im not saying they did bad but the way they had to do the practices was in parts when different members at different times, not that it's their fault but i wonder what they could have done as a end result if they had more whole group practices.

When I watch the episodes I always think "Oh, Jeff would like this or that" lol

Joanne Elizabeth

i thought SF9's performance was absolutely beautiful , YooTaeyang is a stand out star for me

the hosts are 35 (Yunho) and 33 (Changmin)

ATEEZ performance this round is really cinematic and amazing on both technical skills and story telling. Jongho’s voice is really mind-blowing. Really happy for them to raise up the ranks, I think they deserve it. Can’t wait to see what else they have in store for us for the next round. As for Stray Kids, I agree with you that adding Hellevator’s vocal elements would make a more balanced composition with God’s Menu, but their choice to use Side Effects (which is their most controversial song) is very brave. They received so much criticism for that song, so performing it on a competition is like them reclaiming the narrative. Stray Kids’ performance showcased the struggles of fighting your inner demons, which I think is a universal, powerful, and important message to the world – and that’s really what Stray Kids has always been about. Also just want to let you know that after SF9 performance, at 1:41:03, where the subtitle says “Scent! Scent!” during other group’s reaction, I feel like it’s kind of a mistranslation? I believe it’s supposed to be “Perfume! Perfume!” referring to the thriller movie Perfume about a serial killer who captures women scents and turn it into a perfume. That’s why when they drop the ‘liquid’ from the bottle, all the dancers went crazy. I’m not a Fantasy, but I feel like SF9’s performance wasn’t done justice by Kingdom, and I thought this info might give better context that show the depth of the performance better ^^ They really did a great job, and I really feel for them this episode.

Peniel 프니엘 (Peuniel) sounds like Penhiel i think? Any BTOB fan to help us out? BTW, it's being told that SF9 performance was based on the movie Perfume which is about a killer that becomes obsessed with "capturing an elusive aroma, the sent of young womanhood" and ends up in a killing spree to capture it. That mixed with Snow White (the quote at the beginning "Mirror Mirror on the wall who's the worthiest of them all.") ended up with the theme of being Jealous of youth and beauty and killing to steel it. I just absolutely love it ❤ And you're right, watching the full versions helps a lot with the busy feeling of the performances. Although i acknowledge that ATEEZ performance was epic, my top 3 are SF9, BTOB, iKON. Again, a personal preference. Thank you for all the effort you put into the review Jeff 😊

Okay so! Personal Breakdown here: About the stages: as someone who has to do budgeting and help to create sets/stages from scratch let me tell y'all this: Ateez's stage was not expensive. I'm not saying this as a biased thing, it's my professional experience in the industry in live theatre and dance theatre. Even if they had started their staging from scratch (which they didn't, the ship was a mix of pieces from the Illusion set and their concert set), it still wouldn't have cost to the limit that mnet put out (late and with bad communication I might add so like the zzz line really shouldn't be getting hate for that but fandoms are a mess so like I guess we just have to live with that). With that being said, here's a group by group breakdown ignoring the set's used and focusing just on the performance that each group did by looking at rearrangement choices, vocals, choreo, and acting. The Boyz: Loved the concept and the performance, however for their stage I wanted more literal levels. It took me forever to figure out what it was from their performance that just wasn't that last like 5% to make me fully love it like I did with their rtk stages. It was the fact that when they were on the center/main stage behind the fire thing I wanted them to be spread out/lifted up in certain spots to make the staging more dynamic. It's a picky thing on my part as a director but I feel like that little thing not being there made them lose points in my opinion. Vocally I was so in love with it all!!! I was a bit worried when they chose No Air because I wasn't sure how well it would be translated to a more "epic" stage like their other songs from rtk. But they did such a fantastic job with a really unique concept with the POV acting that it all tied together really well! Overall, 8.5/10. iKon: THE MUSICAL THEATRE VIBES OF IT ALL!!! They got me. They had me the moment Bobby started and then when the horns came in on the hook of Love Scenario, I was on Cloud 9. And don't even get me started on DK covering Hanbin's rap, my heart was singing I s2g. Then the switch to Killing Me was acted and flowed so well that legitimately for like 2 seconds I forgot all about the Boyz performance. When they did the part singing/rapping directly to the camera near the end of their performance, it was just so unique for a show/stage like this that it felt purely iKon and really took over the acting to make it just them being the fantastic idols that they are. For me, this was the best performance of episode 2. Overall, 9/10. BtoB: Oooooooooooh my god, the beauty of it all!!!!! The vocals along with the traditional Korea theatre choices added into the stage made the whole performance so incredibly alluring that even as someone who has never really been a Melody (BtoB's fandom) in the 9 years I've been into kpop, I had a moment of considering joining the fandom! (I literally cannot afford it tho lmaoooo) But back to the traditional theatre; the dancers behind the screens during Peniel's rap is like one of the major staples of traditional Korea theatre and seeing them add that along with the dress and dance moves to add the physicality of the tradition that eventually led to kpop and ballads that we know in Korea today was so smart that the theater history nerd in me about exploded! Not to mention that their backup dancers were creating the world of that stage so subtly and wholly that the story became clearer with each moment. AND THE FIGHT SEQUENCE!!! I cannot believe that they managed to pull that off with all of the trees and robes and so many obstacles in the way! My fight choreographers would be giving Minhyuk a standing ovation if I showed them this! Definitely an 8/10 for me. The reason I didn't rank them higher was because I feel like they needed to incorporate the fight into the song a bit better. It was a break rather than a connected moment. SKZ: This arrangement. I don't think I'll be over it for like at least a year. One of my guilty pleasures in life is listening to epic soundtracks/classical pieces whenever I'm working on something that doesn't require me to focus on words and this version of Side Effects/God's Menu would fit right in there. The darkness of the stage along with the boys becoming victorious over their demons right there on stage, while not fully becoming "good" or "heroes" really hit all the right story line spots for me! Vocally, I think this was one of their better versions of God's Menu because with the acting element of this stage they allowed themselves to get into the vocalization of it all much better than other versions of this stage that we've seen. However, I think that their choreo being literally all over the stage detracted from the performance as a whole. I wanted to see more of them in a single space more than they were for this performance. However! They had the levels that I was missing from the Boyz's stage. I'm kind of on the fence still about where I personally place them overall in rankings but my personal score for them is a 9/10. ATZ: My personal fave. I have to be honest straight up here, this was it for me. Starting off, 10/10 they fully deserved that win. They had a clear story, strong acting, and incredible vocals (not just Jongho but like also GET IT !!!!!! THAT 4TH OCTAVE THO!!!). I expected the world from them and by god they delivered. Not to mention the choreo was so strong and stood out to show all the strengths of their group. We got to see the acting of each member, each member had a vocal/rap moment, and the choreo is honestly one for the books. I can't get this arrangement out of my head, Hongjoong and the Edenary team are just hitting all of my favorite musical choices for this one. By the end of it all, I couldn't help but fully love and support this stage the most. SF9: They deserved better. This stage was INCREDIBLE. The acting and choreo with their backup dancers was stunning and honestly something we'd see in a more professional theatrical performance. I kind of fell in love with the backup dancer ladies ngl. The thing that knocked them down a bit for me was the stunt that didn't really need to be there. I think it's a thing, especially in kpop performances like end of the year ones and for shows like this, that you NEED a stunt to make your stage full. I don't really think so. I think if they had kept the levels of the stunt while still doing choreo with maybe some more vocal flairs or some singular choreo stand out moments rather than the full stunt it would have felt more well rounded for the stage and overall would have felt stronger. I feel like in the quest to be more like the zzz line, they forgot their own strengths. They were lacking when it came to vocals for me when we know they can do it along with a lack of group choreo moments (which I know are hard for them to create now with all of their schedules off in 500 directions but still, they are an idol group for this), it just took their stage from great to just good. 8.5/10 for me! Personal final ranking: 1. Ateez 2. iKon 3. Stray Kids 4. The Boyz 5. SF9 6. BtoB Really interesting how differently I ranked in comparison to you, but I did have different personal criteria and vibes from each performance. Can't wait for next week along with your reaction! 😊

kinara

the sf9 songs you mention are bsides but midnight road has a whole choreo video on their yt channel and its gorgeous !! echo was written by zuho when he was injured during the promotions of enough era. I'm also glad I wasn't the only one who like didn't completely vibe with skz's performance like I love the whole horror element in the beginning I do wish they kept it throughout the whole performance if you know what I mean. I do like the remix they did cause hellevator isn't my favorite song from them title track-wise. ateez they never fail to amaze me like omg I loved it sm and wonderland is one of their best title tracks too. I'm also glad I'm not the only one who loves the whole orchestral vibes of songs like what atz did with wonderland or what af9 did with now or never. it was so funny when you mentioned jun was going to in a drama with atz members because I was literally screaming my computer to try and tell you that hwiyoung (and chani too) is also in that drama that's why he talked with him (also the subs when they showed hwiyoung briefly mentioned ateez's jongho lol I was like noo he missed it lol). I'm glad you liked sf9's performance like a lot cause I was like I feel like Jeff would like this when I saw it. And yah the jump was unnecessary like it didn't add anything but they added cause they feel like have to do like the tricks and stuff to like make an eye catching performance which no you don't have to my babies no no. but like besides that they did so well (oh yah if you watch the dance practice for this performance the jump did have more impact that ofc the camera didn't highlight but it still wasn't that necessary imo). it did break my heart when they placed last since no team voted for them I was so sad and I did actually cry cause one of my ult biases of all kpop is Inseong of sf9 and he was so sad and I've never like never seen him so sad before :(. but next round looks so good and yes this show is so stressful omg. i think my ranking would look like this for this round: 1. atz 2. sf9 3. tbz 4. ikon 5. skz 6. btob

Ashley

Sf9's performance was my favorite from this episode, they killed that, Stray kids was good but the song mix was not doing it for me and Ateez was okay not my favorite song from them it didn't really impact me. Sf9 Btob The boyz Stray kids Ikon Ateez But they all did good

Mari

on his podcast they mostly say his name as "pe-kneel", i hope this makes sense haha

My personal ranking 1. Stray Kids 2. Ateez 3. The Boyz 4. SF9 5. iKon 6. BTOB

Have to agree. Not their fault they have busy schedules but they may have been able to put the dancers (Chani for example) doing some tricks if they had the time.

eve_ss

Apparently, stage designs were still part of the criteria for the judges, I mean there's nothing wrong with it especially for this kind of competition setting, however, since MNET (intentionally or unintentionally regardless) is fully aware of the budget issue, what they could have done on this situation was to just remove the criteria for this round to be more fair but unfortunately they did not. MNET even said that they would be fairer on the next round, means they acknowledged the fact that this round were not judged fairly. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed all the performances and especially the interactions!! I'm so very excited for the next round!! and omg the preview tho. 🔥😍

Victoria

They all did amazing but Ateez especially killed it! I loved everything about their stage, I had chills watching it. Also jongho’s high notes 👌🏻 1. Ateez 2. Stray Kids 3. The Boyz 4. Sf9 5. Ikon 6. Btob

I don't care that this is a long video. That just mean that we get a lof of thoughts, analytics, observation etc. Which is why I love watching your videos in the first place 😉👍 Although my ranking is different from yours I understand and actually agree with your reasoning with thoose criterias. It's just that I rank based on what "hits me the hardest" what makes the biggest impact on me, I want to re-watch the most. And for me in this round it was: Ateez, BTOB, SF9, The Boyz, Stray Kids and iKON. But I really loved ALL performances. They were AMAZING in their own way 😍 BTW, I want to applaud you for daring to come with your honest opinions and constructive criticism since many kpop fans sadly can be very intensely protective of their groups. I do feel like, from what I see of your community, that we all do like this part of your videoes and appreciate it 😊💖

RisingSunbebe

I asbolutely hate the show - I've been ranting at least once per week when it airs lol... that being said I love most of the groups, so I'm watching and voting even though I hate the show itself hahaha.. but yeah, they already have controversies considering the unequal budget (so your evaluation of stage/props and all that can be taken with grain of salt - not because of you but because of the production that didn't inform all the groups that they can use more money) and experts that no one knows who they are because the production said they 'can't say who they are because of possible direct or indirect connection of some of those people to the artists competing' - like that's not a possible conflict of interest... so yeah... I hate them, but groups are not at fault and I just want to enjoy the performances... it's just sad to watch them be sad because of the rankings when the whole show is not fair. Damn, I ranted again... my favorite was ATEEZ this time, so at least that is right lol

RisingSunbebe

Oh and you asked about hosts' age - Yunho is 35, Changmin is 33.

freya valykrie

Peniel is Korean American so I guess it's American pronunciation hehehe

Jeff you can learn to read hangul in just 1 day. It's easy to memorize

I experienced that my ranking changed too after watching the performances several times, including the full version without cuts. After hearing your reasoning as well my personal opinion would be: 1 Ateez, 2 The boyz, 3 Ikon, 4 Stray kids, 5 SF9 and 6 BTOB. Regardless, all of the perfomances were freaking amazing and all groups deserve so much cause they all work so freaking hard for this.

Krizzy G

Hi, For experts evaluation, it is correct that IKON and BTOB both ranked 5th with same amount of points. Let’s admit it, we gotta love Ateez performance. It’s actually my first time to hear that song and the fact it lingers on me says a lot. I would love to get into Ateez, but I’m not sure their fans are that much welcoming. I’m glad that we can vote three teams since I literally can’t pick just one performance. So my top performances would be, ATEEZ - STRAY KIDS - BTOB For the others tho, it was surely great yet, for IKON, the shift between two songs could’ve been better (it’s a literal fadeout between two choruses). That said I really love them and both songs for SF9, on first watch of the livebroadcast I kinda missed it but the more I watched their performance vid, the more I liked it. It’s classy. for TBZ, I cannot say anything because they are always epic it’s just personal preferance. Tbh, the show is for general public so I guess nonexperts will vote based on which performance striked them first while watching the broadcast. I’m curious tho on how they will announce the fanvotes for the first round. Will the fanvotes be accummulated and be announced on finale?

Paulina K.

To be honest, ATEEZ did so great, that after their performance I was just so overwhelmingly proud that I started crying. My sister saw me and thought that something bad happened to them during the show, especially since all I could say while crying was "ATEEZ, ATEEZ", before I calmed down a little and explained that these were happy tears 😅 Later on I cried the second time, because of SF9, but that was not from happiness.. It wasn't also because they were last, I know that someone has to be, but the fact that they didn't get a single point from self-evaluation just hurts me, as a fan.. Especially since their performance deserved better, in my opinion. Even if the result would stay the same with some additional points from the artists, it's just so sad that SF9 received nothing. I know they are probably very hurt by that 😞 My personal ranking would be (after watching all performances a few times) : 1. ATEEZ, 2. THE BOYZ, 3. SF9, 4. BTOB, 5. Stray Kids, 6. iKON. I wonder how the official ranking would change after fan voting. I wish ATEEZ would stay in the first place, but we'll see.

Jeff, my mom always watches your reactions with me and she says you are her King hahahhahahhahahhahah

Lawresha

I wouldn't have minded the judging for this round if for one the group's knew the who they where so they could at least be told what they needed to work so they could be better next time and I know mnet said that it was for fairness just in case any of the idols knew the judges but that doesn't make sense because the judges still would know who their voting for so I feel either way it would be conflict the fans don't have to know but I do feel the idol should know also mnet litteraly gave the judges a streaming link and thats unprofessional on mnets behalf I think they should have a better way to watch and analyze what they see because I feel like this is the reason the judges said they judged by the grandness of the stage and props which unfair to the senior groups who weren't notified of the budget change but I have high hope for the next episode as they stated everything after ep 3 would be completely fair and I want to see more interactions and eunkwang from btob said hes gotten closer to straykids but couldn't say more cuz it might be a spoiler im gonna stop here I just typed a whole lot and no one will probably read it

leen

I’m always a bit iffy about fan vote and view count when it comes to these competitions. Especially with it taking such a big portion of the scoring, it’s all just a big popularity contest. But yea, everything else considered I’d also rank Ateez 1st. That was a journey that I fully enjoyed from beginning to end. I also always enjoy how you breakdown and evaluate the performances :)

jeffavenue

haha don’t worry i read it! the streaming part for the judges is interesting but it makes sense cause how else would they watch in real time haha. i’m guessing they get the stream of the camera angles that were present on the full cam versions (not the camera rig and stuff). so it may be close to what we saw but of course i can’t confirm that. it WOULD suck if it’s a static live feed they used tho. i kinda wish we also got to know the judges but i’m guessing it’s also for their safety- cause we know how kpop fans can be and those experts may not have any security of kpop fans became too invasive.

mistywolf the dragon rider

I just wanted to say, about BTOB's performance, I completely get what you mean about the difficulty level and Peniel's rap being a little pitchy, even about the key change being awkward. But I disagree about the arrangement. The way I saw it, it fit the concept they were going for very well. It felt like a victorious soldier returning home from a long battle/war. Maybe the emotional aspect is affecting me too much, but as a fan I think that is part of my role in this. I am not a professional, so I will not evaluate like one. Other than that, I agree with your ranking, although I would've put Stray Kids above IKON simply because I enjoyed their performance a bit more. Anyways, I'm so happy for ATEEZ, they are one of my ult groups and I'm very proud of them. Can't wait to see what they will all do for the next round!

jasmine teume

BtoB and iKON both got 5th place from the professionals ranking so that wasn't a mistake since the score is the same. I disagree that we should place a high value on the professional ranking ONLY because the professionals confirmed that they were not told about the budget issue (which would be okay if props and stuff weren't part of their criteria but it WAS) and they also said they watched it on a very crappy live stream and if it lagged and buffered, that the done deal and they were told to still give their score without being able to rewatch it or anything.

thank you! it’s the hardest to be honest in the kpop world but i always remind myself that as long as i’m coming from a good place and can back it up with knowledge, i can feel free to offer some insight. im happy yall are welcoming my thoughts! also - i’m glad a lot of people seem to have liked ateez the most as well!

Despite the props or something i really like ateez arrangement. it was so them. The moment you hear it. The brain automatically says ateez 🤭 and the grandness of climax dance sooo goodd. I like btob, the vibe soo good and ikon's love scenario, it was fun.

Mesha ✌︎

for me tbz perfomance had it all

Okay but the longer the reaction the better 😍😌👌

I pretty much agree with everything you say here. In regards to Ateez, I am so glad you mentioned Jongho’s technique with his high note. As a classical musician myself, I think you could hear that he really pushed for that top note (which was a B5, which is a note above the typical Soprano 1 choral range!!) but I had not thought of it as a stylistic choice until you said that. Even if it wasn’t, I think people who aren’t vocalists (or are Ateez anti’s which there are LOTS of and I’ve seen this exact argument from them) think he was screaming, but like you said it was on pitch and incredibly in tune as well. That is something about his technique that continuously amazes me because even live and when dancing his pitch is near perfect. And even though he really pushed for that top note (I mean literally his body was shaking), the rest of the run was well-placed, well-supported, and in tune, and the sheer amount of technique it takes to even reach the B5 is amazing even if it wasn’t perfect. And in regards to the budget issue, I still think Ateez would have won without the props because their song choice, arrangement, choreo, and story line were so clear and creative and their performance energy was so high that I don’t think the story would have been lost despite it being less flashy without the Kraken balloon. The musical arrangement was what impressed me the most. It was incredibly smart of them to use Dvorak’s New World Symphony for so many reasons. The key and chordal structure somehow fit perfectly with Wonderland, and the round was literally called To The World. I mean come on that’s just genius to me. Last thing I’ll say is that I have a personal soft spot for The Boyz’s stage just because of how big of a risk it was to go contemporary in the arrangement and dancing. I think it is a dance style they pull off so well and one that no other group in KD could execute the way TBZ do. Thanks for your reaction and insight! Love how you approached the ranking and I’m excited to watch the rest of the series with you!!

My personal ranking would be 1.SF9 (I loved that performance and I'm still sad and how it was the last Place... But well..) 2. Ateez 3. The boyz 4. iKON 5. BTOB 6. Stray Kids And btw when you talked about the imitation drama just so you know chani and hwiyoung from sf9 will also be on That drama and if I'm not mistaken the video That they show with right before you said That it was them filming something for That drama as some of the Ateez members were there as well

I also started to cry when watching Ateez and was so confused as to why but I think it's because I'm so proud of how far they have come so I guess it was happy tears glad to know that I wasn't the only one lol

jeffavenue

thank you! i’m always honoured when other professionals like yourself watch my reactions and as well have similar observations as I do. jongho is an incredible talent and i agree that ateez would’ve definitely still been able to produce an amazing performance as what they showed us was quite balanced :)

I'm enjoying the performances from the show but I really don't like show aspect, like the competition part I feel like it'd be a better show without pitting the groups against each other.

I literally had to stop myself from watching it last week because I want to watch it with you. So i can get some insights from someone who has experience in performing. So my rank based on which performance i really like. 1. Ateez 2. Stray Kidz 3. The Boyz 4. SF9 5. BtoB 6. iKON I followed The Boyz journey in RTK and I must say those performances were legendary. But now, it seems that they are stuck in that same concept (dark with a twist, little bit of classical then tricks). I just want something new from them.

jinkichimchim

Why we are cute I think? I mean Ateez fans if u want help with them u can ask me I’ll be very happy 💜

jinkichimchim

To be honest I didn’t even noticed that there was budget differences in their stages. I think they all had an amazing stage. For Ateez ? Why they even complaining because they had kraken arm ? They didn’t see anything else in that performance? It was perfect if u are objective but we all know that fans are very subjective

Izak

My personal ranking is : 1. Ateez 2. Ikon 3. Straykids 4. The boyz 5. Sf9 6.btob i have a lengthy explanation i posted on twitter but I’m too lazy to re type it i have a lot of similar reasons to you but ikon was high on mine just because i liked that it was really unique like it’s something i would have guessed they would do really, there are other reasons but that’s my main one and the boyz and straykids are interchange for me tbh

Compared to RTK it seems like the budget is different. Even the scale of the companies is different, we have YG, JYP which have really good staff and can afford expensive choreographer. And the MCs are 35 (yunho) and 33 (changmin) if you were wondering!

Sunny

So my ranking is : 1. Ateez (it was excellent, the song was amazing, clear storyline, dance was great and these VOCALS hello??) 2. The Boyz (great and fresh Storyline, dance and vocals was great, and the emotions that they put in was also wonderful) 3. SF9 ( IT WAS SO GOOD I MEANNNN??? The storyline is from based from the book and movie "The Parfum" , and even if you don't know this, you can understand the story, dance was great, vocals were good.....but the camerawork- wouldn't wonder me if Mnet is playing favorites again, because honey at some parts the camera was filming where it shouldn't have 4. Stray Kids (Song and Performance was good, I loved the feeling of the perf, no. 4 bec I found the other just personally better) 5 is BTOB for me- they are great in Vocals, and they really tried something new, but I just like more singing with performance, so that just wasn't it for me. But the rest: great 6. IKON - some will maybe come at me for this but f it. I am tbh kinda disappointed in them. They didn't really put many ideas or thoughts into this like the other groups had. And I don't mean probs or something like that- they really just put two songs and put them in one together one dance break and that was it.... it could have been wayyyy better. And I expect a little bit more from IKON such a big group from one of the top Entertainments. The idea behind it was good, and I loved the beginning with the musical concept...but yeah. And even if you dont agree with me on this one...but IKON ranked number 1? No, def not, not when the other groups had so much more to offer at this evening. And if they continue like this.... I don't really see them at number 1 anytime soon.

emotionless bot

IKon lost their spark the moment their most vital member left the group which is B.I. The reason why their previous survival shows performances were so successful was "majorly" because of B.I, their idea bank. their leader. their face. I just feel so sad because there is a lot of "what ifs" in my end on how B.I would lead their team to victory if ever he is here. Like imagine Ateez without Hongjoong, that's how it feels like. but i know Ikon is competitive, so i am expecting them to prove me wrong. +++++++++++++ ATEEZ killed it. this is exactly what I was expecting the moment I heard that they will join Kingdom. I am so proud of my ULTS.

I always love your reactions Jeff! Very objective! My personal ranking is ATEEZ-SKZ-TBZ. Regardless of the issue with the budget, the props, the experts etc. I really think that ATEEZ has the best performance. It was just super complete - the dance, vocals, concept, story and the ENERGY (you can really see the passion in their eyes and the fact that they really want to win). All the elements needed were there and they didn't miss even 1 bit. There were a lot of fanwars over twitter. Several groups and fanbases even mass emailed Mnet and started discrediting ATEEZ and the fact that they took the top spot. So your reaction or your objective judgement really means a lot to me. It gives me that confidence that my observations were also right and I picked the right group for number 1. I'm a new subscriber here, it has just been weeks, but I'm super enjoying the content. Thanks Jeff!

Camylle Val

they wouldn't be here, like in this program, if BI was still in the group, I think they are able to overcome it all but they have suffered so much... I''m afraid this will be one more heartbreak

ATEEZ was also my number 1 for this round and I was genuinely happy that they ranked first in both the professional ranking and the self-evaluation :D my numbers 2-4 were also the same...the only difference in my personal ranking is that I enjoyed SF9 more than BTOB. I'm really exited for the next episodes to come because them switching songs is really interesting and I'm sure there will be a lot more concepts to look forward to. Honestly I would watch Kingdom even without the competition aspect because I honestly don't really care who wins since all of them deserve it...I'm just here to enjoy the performances and the cute interactions :)

Just joined and no regrets. You have the most objective ranking evaluation I've heard and it's a breath of fresh air. Most people are ranking based on feel or preference or focusing on just a few performance aspects.

Val

so my original rank was 1) ateez 2) sf9 3) tbz 4)skz 5)btob 6)ikon but when you watch and evaluate i often agree a lot with what you say, and a main reason i enjoy watching your reactions is because you're so objective. i would really be all for the professional panel rankingjudging if mnet would actually show who they are and they explain what field they are from, i think my trust and expectations for mnet are just beyond low that i find it really really hard to trust them for it, i want to believe the panel are just doing their thing, and that they're legit professionals but mnet have messed up so bad so many times that im really hesitant about it.

Exekyute (Kyu)

This comment will probably never be seen, but you’ve definitely heard 2PM’s Heartbeat in a way because there was a performance of the song in The Unit+.

Marina Korab

Performance from SF9 was my favourite, like T.O.P from Golden Child on RTK, so underrrated!!!!

Anonymous

My top 3 were SF9, Stray Kids and Ateez. I'm a multi and stan all of these groups, but I'm also a sucker for classical pieces in kpop performances cause I play piano since 8 yo. Tbh I completely forgot tbz's performance, it didn't wow me at all sadly. Btob's perf was very touching and iKON's perf was great but I found the songs very different, like the 1st time I watched it I enjoyed it, but I haven't watched the stage since then.

I didn't take the judges voting to heart, because some of them (the names are revealed in the final episode) have worked with certain groups in Kingdom and others are random magazine and corporation workers...like what?
