I really think that the mentors was kind of harsh with their critique sometimes to the point that its not constructive anymore but detrimental I guess thats how it goes with idol training in korea. Anyways you are right Jeff with Dongho as his real name and Baekho as stage name, the nues’t members well three of them use stage names the other two is Minki stage name Ren and Jonghyun stage name JR.

this season definitely has my fav song

My greatest pet peeve of P101 is how they favor high Tenors. It's so odd that they only care about main vocalists and purposefully make a song in such a high key (with no rap parts even, or lower harmonies). It's so shallow to deem the best vocalist as someone who can hit the highest voice, and it's disappointing how most baritones in kpop are pushed to be only rappers/think it's their problem that they can't sing the high keys. Why would they give A to rappers and then make an evaluation song with no rap parts?? I get maybe everyone should be able to sing a little but the system just seems hyperbolic.

Hi! I really like that you are reacting to this, and believe me there will be many surprises as the show goes on. But I heard that you mentioned pd x 101 a lot, and I'm really curious if you've ever reacted to it? I'm super curious about your opinion when you first saw the show and if you never recorded it is there maybe a chance that you will react to it again and see if a second opinion arises while watching it? I have been watching all the pd series a lot maybe more than 10 times, and everytime I see that some op inions change in regards to some songs/performances. Also greeting from the Netherlands I'm a big fan!

At the ending, after the song they reveals the rankings of the trainees. So if you want you can see the evaluation of the rankings troughout the season. I still remember how cute Seon Ho’s phone call with his parents was 💕. He was one of those funniest and dorkiest in S2. Also after he said that he wanted 5 meals a day, mnet sent them chickens to eat 😂🍗 Uri Byeongari SeonHo🐥💛

rk2000

3 of the current AB6IX members are on the show- with 2 of them debuting in the final line up of Wanna One (Daehwi & Woojin)- Daehwi (the one you probably know cause he's shown a lot), Woojin (the rapper), and Donghyun (the one you said had a pretty face earlier lol)

rk2000

Also with Jinyoung, I feel like the main thing he needed to work on was his lack of confidence, which translated into his facial expressions- but he was definitely already skilled like you said. But wow did he work on that, because his facial expressions and confidence when performing are some of the best in kpop rn imo & are his strengths.

Delete that he dont want spoilers why would u put that if u know he is watching the show

I definitely agree with you on the harmonies, not a lot of group utilize that a lot and it's a shame bc it can add so much into a song to sound a lot better. Probably also one of the reasons why my ults are SHINee and CIX who utilized harmonies in almost all of their songs, they even used it when they're singing live too (CIX even said in one of their interviews that harmonizing is their hobby like they would harmonize each other when someone's singing in the car that sometimes no one would sing it in the original key bc everyone's harmonizing lmaooo). Anyways, the 2 groups have such good vocalists. The thing about Jinyoung is, he was only a 10-month trainee by the time he went on this show and he was already pretty good in dancing shows a lot of his talent and his capabilities to improve even more. He was also the only trainee that represents the company so he had no friends to share his problems with either. His singing techniques was very lacking at that time and very unstable but damn, boy, he even became the lead vocalist in CIX now (I recommend listening to his cover with Seunghun here https://twitter.com/CIX_twt/status/1345717222883295233?s=19 he starts singing at 0:35 and you can easily tell which one is him from that point on bc their voices are very different) You don't know how satisfying it is to see his improvements like he used to be pretty unstable even when he's singing while standing still but now he can sing veeeery comfortably and sounds reeeally good at that. He is definitely a fast-learner though (you've seen his MMMH cover, he learned the dance of the chorus for 20mins during his vlive on new year and could master it immediately right at that spot), he was just very lacking in confidence. I'm really, really glad that he did bc just ugh look at his stage presence now it's insaneee Oh and also!!! If you don't know this already, all of the Brand New Music trainees are now what you know as AB6IX (except Youngmin, he was also in the group but quit due to DUI) One more thing!!!! This is getting so long I'm sorry OTL but SHINee's reality show is now available with engsubs on VIU but I'm not sure if it would be available in your country, maybe try watching it with VPN? Here's the link https://t.co/0NvkkQSVO5 watch out tho it's also a 2-hour long show😆

Jeff said in the reaction to the 1st ep of this show that he watched pdx101 while it was airing and I guess it was even before he started a YT channel.

watching this after the unit is kinda... not fun at all like contestants are good, judges are okay, but what's up with production for real??

eve_ss

I totally agree with you about the evaluation of the rappers here and I really think that it's kind of unfair in a way. 💔 But I feel like it's because in Idol industry, having rappers is more of like a 'concept' tbh and Idol group songs doesn't necessarily or usually have a section that needs rapping and that's why I feel like they put more value or focus on singing than rapping, which in reality is really sad because there were so many great rappers in the industry that can't fully utilize or show their skills and be recognized with their talent.

Okay I wanna talk so much... but I'm gonna comment on 3 or 4 :) I just wanted to say.... there is so many things that u said that just makes me tear up ngl.. at some point I cried anyway but it's a mix of many things... the episode, how I feel..., your ""analyse"" and more... I just want to thank you so much coz this is a 3 hour long video and I know that it's not easy at all to put out those vids for us and it's not only you just sit there and watch; you are involved and tell us stories/ talk about your experience and more ANYWAY THANK YOU LOVE YOU 😭💕 PS : I'm sure you know this but if you watch more dramas or Korean shows your Korean pronunciation will get better :) but rn you are only beginning and it shows that u learned a lot ! Goodluck on that ♡

Maybe it's because I was in choir for 7 years but the way they evaluate the trainees and train them drives me a bit crazy lol I definitely also think it's unfair to force rappers to sing then make them feel like crap if they can't do well when they probably were never even trained in singing before hand. Also, the song is SO high and different people have different registers and tones and ranges so some of the trainees not being able to hit the notes is not that surprising nor is it disappointing for me?? In choir we're assigned to our vocal parts and we sing within those, I was an alto in choir so you can bet I was never forced to sing a soprano's part because that is not in my range! The thing that really frustrates me about Produce and a lot of other Korean survival shows is that the trainers often times belittle and insult the trainees instead of helping them. "You have no talent in singing what can I do", "I have nothing to say that was just terrible.", "If you can't do this simple thing why are you here?", all of these things are not constructive criticism and is just tearing down the trainees mental state. Of course you need to be objective and serious when evaluating but there's a difference between constructive criticism and straight up dissing someone without giving them help or means to fix the issue. This is one of the reasons Minghao (The8 from Seventeen) remains one of my favorite survival show mentors, he never said harsh words and he never made the trainees he worked with feel insignificant, he calmly and respectfully showed them step by step what they needed to learn regardless of what class they were in and was always there to help when the trainees had questions without being condescending and rude. While I liked to see the brotherhood formed on this show, the beginnings of some of my favorite idols, and the amazing performances, I really can't stand to watch some of the training scenes in this one.

Okay honestly I could go all day about how much I truly dislike the kpop machine for the singular fact that they really deny true artists their place in the industry. The pressure to be exactly like the last big group/money making concept is so disheartening to see. (And then don't even get me started on mnet shoving their way into the whole thing and making it even worse imo) HOWEVER! seeing this season again after having rewatched pdx101 (because we love to torture ourselves in this household lmaooooo) I have to say that the produce trainers definitely learned and grew themselves. Mnet may still be a snake and has a shitty idea of how to "make" an idol group but I think the trainers all saw that after this season because the future ones were much more rounded and adjusted to fit more "types" of idols. Still, this is why I have to give the smallest of recognition to I-land because I think that was the idol survival show with the best adjustment of tests/trials to create a well rounded group of artists, not just idols. I mean, we still got evil editing and mnet/cj e&m rubbing their grubby little hands all over it so for anyone thinking of watching it just know that's still very much a thing.

Samantha

Also, last point here I swear, I'm of the belief that anyone can learn how to be a singer/dancer/performer. To what degree they shine out from a group is up to them and their natural ability but you can become a performer in some way/to some degree no matter who you are. And maybe that's the theater teacher in me saying that but just because you're not the center of the dance formation or the soloist of the vocal piece doesn't make you somehow lesser. I hate when ppl, and especially kpop fans, act like only the "aces" and "all rounders" are worth giving attention to. Like no, appreciate the backup singers, the backup dancers, the producers and mixers, hell even the managers! Without foundations, of course you'll fall short of those with the training and confidence to succeed. But if you push yourself into the training, the classes, the experiences to learn and grow, you can become /something/ in the performance industry. (Sometimes with these competition shows I just want to hug the idol tight and let them know that yes you may not get number 1 but that doesn't make you untalented or worthless!!!! Keep going, improve yourself and your skills and you get /somewhere/ in this messed up world of entertainment and performance lmaoooooo!)

Jeff in episode 1: “ I’m not gonna talk too much because this is a long episode” Jeff in episode 2: *pauses every five minutes* Dont get me wrong I’m not complaining hahah, I actually find your commentary super interesting! It’s so cool to hear your experience with auditioning and how it applies to the show, there are things I never would’ve noticed that you point out! I’m also super glad that you’re not falling for the evil editing. Like Haknyeon got evil edited a LOT to look lazy even though he just had a slower learning curve like u said, because Mnet and Loen (parent company of Creker) had a bad relationship at the time. He got so much hate that even extended to his family :( I also don’t know if you noticed that Hwanwoong, Keonhee (spelled Gunhee in the show), and Seoho from Oneus are all here- they look soooo different here lmao. Also , the guy with the black beanie in class D whose singing you liked is Hweseung, main vocal of N.Flying. He’s one of the best vocalists of this generation I swear but he hardly got any screen time :(

hey jeff I noticed when you talk about the produce x 101 song you say 'hajima' it's actually just 'Jima' -지마(X1-MA), thought you should know 😅 I'm sorry 🙏🏻

People are saying that it's unfair for rappers and the whole Idol ranking system is wrong etc.. but they are forgetting that the term "Idol" is supposed to be an all-rounder. Not just sing, rap & dance but also have stage presence and charisma. And even have variety skills. If you need to excel in any particular field, they should join those reality shows, for Rappers shows like SMTM or become an OST singer if they are really good at singing but lack other factors. Idols are supposed to be all-rounders. It was never about "only" music. They are selling a package, a fantasy to users.

Anonymous

Adding to what Jeff said that if someone is good at either singing or rapping and dancing, like out of 3 good at 2 things, they can still be an Idol. Yes, they can. But then you'll get a low evaluation in at least "reality shows" that are meant to find all-rounders. The compromise starts later in the rounds when they find people who are exceptionally good at one thing but can still make the line-up even though they lack in other areas. If you are becoming an Idol without having to participate in a reality show, then yes it's even more possible. We've already seen Idols from decent groups who are just in the groups to serve visuals and a bit of dancing.

Hi Jeff, just commenting on what you said about the unfairness of expecting rappers to sing. Some of the best rappers that I have heard are really good vocalists eg. Han and Changbin from Stray Kids and Key and Minho from Shinee. I think most agencies prefer their artists to be able to fill in for other members if needed.

Hey Jeff, I was wondering if you know about Korean age? I mention this because of your comment about the 15 year old trainee Woojin's age. "Korean age" is the traditional way of counting our age. Koreans say that a baby is already 1 year old when it's born (to account for time spent in the womb). Then, everyone's Korean age changes on the new year, rather than their individual birthday. So for example, BTS Taehyung, born December 30, 1995, would have been 1 year old the day he was born, and 2 years old on January 1, 1996. So basically, whatever age an idol says they are, they are 1 or maybe 2 years younger than that in international age. I only point this out because the ages given by idols and given in this shows will be their Korean age, rather than their international age. The 15 year old trainee, Lee Woojin, was actually 13 years old in international age at the time of filming. Which isn't to say your point about age was wrong, since Niki from ENHYPEN was only 14 when his group debuted. But I do think it helps when judging a contestant's relative skill - a year's difference can be a lot for a kid that young. (Besides this, Woojin's company was later found guilty of abusing their idols, so I can't imagine he was being given suitable training.) On a lighter note, good luck on your studying! 화이팅!

You're right about not being able to perform in all areas doesn't mean you lack in talent. I really don't get that idea either. I watched a show once (forgot which one) where these trainers said it was fine if they aren't good in all areas because that's where other members of the group could fill in those areas. They even said having a visual that couldn't sing was fine as long as they could dance and because an idol group needs a visual in the group. And then there's P101 with its high ass standards of making sure all the trainees are completely well-rounded lol

Hi Jeff!! I'm just starting your Produce 101 S2 reactions, and when it comes to your thoughts about the rappers in the vocal class vs vocalists in the rapping classes, I just wanted to say that there are some survival shows that do show vocalists in a rap "class" and not being able to rap/write lyrics.... they're not Korean though. I think it's either from a Japanese or Chinese survival show. But I also half agree and disagree with your thoughts about rappers not really needing to sing. There are a lot of idol rappers who can sing very well! (Jisung from Stray Kids, in a way, Chan from Stray Kids, J-Hope from BTS, I think either Key or Minho from Shinee, Chanyeol form EXO, Taeyong from NCT can also sing a bit, and some others that I can't name off of the top of my head.) But I do also agree with your reasonings as to why rappers shouldn't be expected to sing. .... idk what I was trying to say honestly by now.... but yeah..... hopefully you can check out the Chinese or Japanese shows where they do show Vocalists trying to rap/write lyrics! It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts!
