hi, this might seem rude to comment here about something totally unrelated, but please react to nct dream’s rooftop fight series! there are currently 2 episodes, and they’re sooo fun!

Eva van Galen

Omg I didn't know they are going to make a series out of one of my favorite manhwa's! I'm definitely going to watch and would also love reactions.

SNSD are around 30, A Pink I think close to 30 and they are still active, Irene from Red Velvet actually turns 30 this year. As well as with men the longevity (?) of their careers depends on how popular they are (and how much the company cares about them *crying in f(x) language*)

I've been enjoying rewatching this with you, and then realised last week that I never finished the whole run when it aired, so today got the added pleasure of watching for the first time in your company.

MinSeo Kim

Oh, I forgot about god.. they are also a 1st gen boy group and active right now! (also all 40s...)

Deb

Yes, I would absolutely love if you’d react to Jun x ATEEZ’s upcoming drama! I have a feeling it’ll be so much fun.

S H

Yeah seems to be that the female idols are now sometimes able to stay at it a bit longer....though still not like the male idols with groups like shinhwa still active after all...

S H

Oh would love to watch that new drama with you. There's actually also Replay which features (G)Idle's Miyeon and SF9's Hwiyoung along with Marco that's out next week I think (webdrama that will be available on youtube too). My favourite songs when this aired were actually Sweet and Cherry on top. I'm older and the cute concepts and music does nothing for me haha but Always team definitely executed the concept well. Like you said the top 2 songs were both well done, and in the end it was a matter of the taste of the live audience. I liked sweet because of how Euna Kim sang it. Would have been excellent if she sang the whole song! She doesn't have the type of clear voice that seems to be favoured in a standard girl group but it's got character and stands out. She also knows how to sing according to the genre and make herself sound good for different genres (which is such skill). As for the Poco Poco group...They'd competed hard to win that song and then ended up being worried they couldn't execute it?? That puzzled me a bit...so why didn't they go for another song? Yang Jiwon is very pretty and she looked pretty here but I like her better as she dresses normally instead of the overly girly sweet styling they had here. Btw I only just found she had released a solo song in May last year! And she sounds absolutely amazing in it!

Mahima

That girl HYUNJOO , she is acting now. She has been in so many web drama on Youtube . She's quite Mature now lol xD

brianna a

honestly, in terms of the "poco a poco" team, I think they were going for the "catchy" song that people would like to sing along to so that's why they chose it.. kinda like feeldog's group??

Yeah sadly GG not last long, compared tk BG. But GG can debut with mature age, like irene red velvet debuted at 25 yo. Meanwhile for BG is too risky because close to their military service Also, Boy with heels reminds me with a variety show, its called Why not the dancer. Its a dance variety show. Gikwang(Highlight), Eunhyuk(Super junior), Taemin and Jisung(NCT) were casted. Lia kim were there for a moment as well. They went aboard to learn variety dance type and one of them, they learned dance with heels. Was it gikwang and eunhyuk? I dont really remember. Its 2018 varshow 🤣

Nova Amore

Honestly, your advice about the heels when dancing would have been so useful for me about 3 or 2 years ago. I had to dance for my school for a musical, and the heels I was required to wear slipped off my feet and I sprained my ankle. (since they made me wear shoes with really thin and tall heels) Good thing it was during one of our earlier rehearsals, because I had enough time to recover from that fall. Sighhhh

Nova Amore

I'm curious, do you have any suggestions for someone who's ankle is pretty messed up?? Because my left ankle is the weaker one out of the two, just because I did stupid stuff when I was younger.... sigh. I mean, I don't dance anymore, but in general, my ankle is still pretty bad when walking, running, etc. I feel like dancers have a lot of tips about this.... right??

i'm still watching but i had to comment about it, as kpop fans we do notice the unfairness in treatment of girl groups versus boy groups, all second gen and most third gen girl groups have disbanded and its so so sad , some of the members go on solo careers and into acting, what i noticed too is that maybe they expect them to settle down with a partner and get married "before its too late" i don't see the same pressure on male idols to settle down with family and if they do the group doesn't disband right away, its so unfair that once girl groups grow out the "cute concept" age or the girl crush concept gets "too boring and repetitive" for the general public then the group its instantly done, i hope with the new wave of groups this doesn't happen, so many talented girl groups disbanded before they should have,, i mean also some 1st gen girl groups do get together and release a special album sometimes but they don't actively perform as a group

the thing you said about the editing of the show being misleading is the reality of the kpop entertainment industry tbh, they always aim for perfection. you get street cast or accepted through audition by agencies, they train you, schedule singing, dancing, modeling and acting lessons with you and like more than 30 trainees together who are your competitors, they assess your development daily, every 3 days, weekly, monthly and even quarterly. they will eliminate those who doesn't show improvement nor reach the certain trainee standards because you as a trainee is like their product, they won't invest in you if they know they can't sell you. the big 3 SM, JYP and YG are like their own produce 101 tbh or even worse bcs they can let even a week old trainee go home if they don't see potential or improvement. some trainees like Taeyong of NCT, inexperienced and started from 0 but is passionate and has the drive and will to learn and improve quick. this is also why trainees and idols often gets disappointed with themselves easily because their mindset is always to aim for perfection, synchronization, details and competition. it also doesn't end there bcs once they debut the kpop market is so saturated, because every year over 100 groups debut and it's hard to make it big in korea more than internationally (foreigners will eat up anything kpop these days meanwhile koreans have their constant chart-topping ballad singers and idol picks like iu, snsd, twice, exo, bts, bigbang), these adds to the pressure they feel which is also hard for their mental health.

The oldest girl group that is truly still active is A-pink, and they debuted young. Currently they are aged 29-24 (international). The oldest is a 91 liner, same as the oldest members in younger groups like Red Velvet and Mamamoo. SNSD is officially still together, but focusing on solo careers (ages 31-29), so it's hard to judge how the Korean public would respond to them. Then there is Brown Eyed Girls: 3 members are 39 and the makne is 33. They are the oldest girl group still together (and with no line-up changes at that); However, they haven't really promoted since 2015. They had a special concert for their 10th anniversary in 2016 and released an album of cover songs in 2019, but no promos. SES, a first gen group, got together again briefly to celebrate their 20th debut anniversary; however, unlike the 1st gen boy groups that got together and restarted their careers in recent years, SES made it clear it was just a one-off deal and did only one or two TV appearances. I think the main difference in the out-dated gender roles Korea has about motherhood. I gather that despite women having education and careers just like men when they are younger, as soon as they get married and have kids they are still expected to quit their jobs (if possible) and anyway be the main caregiver for all children+the husband. You can see these strict gender roles in many ways in dramas and variety shows like Return of Superman, that is trying to change it, but not very successfully... It makes me wonder about the different standards for idols and actresses. One of the SES members, Eugene, is a popular actress. No one seems to think she is neglecting her kids by returning to acting (she took several years off when they were young). I wonder if it has to do with the age and gender of the audience for k-dramas vs. k-pop.

PositiveThinking

Sadly, of the top kpop producers I only know of one female and that is Kenzie. There are a bit more women who are successful top-liners and lyricist though. Kenzie is seriously amazing, she works in-house at SM and has a phenomenal list of hits - people have made compilations of her work. Could be fun if you react to one.

Not sure if they have been suggested to you or not, but if you're curious about what Lucky (space buns girl) is doing now, check out Cignature! Good Day (Lucky's original group) got rebranded as Cignature with some members leaving and some added, but it might be interesting for you to see how they've grown since the unit (spoiler: a lot, Lucky is lead vocal now.. and also goes by a new stage name, Belle). For random facts they're under C9 aka the same label as CIX :)

ALSOOO, JUN IS A GREAT ACTOR and he does musical/theater too. He's born in 1997 and has 3 acting awards as of now. Can't wait to see more of his works tbh.

eve_ss

Definitely a YES for Jun's drama!! 🥰 Thank you so much for considering it! ☺️ Wow, you're almost done with THE UNIT. Time flies so fast ~ I really enjoyed rewatching this with you ❤ just wondering if you have another survival show in mind to react next? but I'll also understand if you don't have any at the moment since I know you have lots of other contents to react to like dramas, comebacks, etc. ☺️ ( and also Kingdom which will reportedly air on April)

Sara Fitzpatrick

Did you know that UNIT B and UNIT G bothe released their own promotional songs other than My Turn. UNIT B - Last one UNIT G - Shine You should watch them their are no spoilers.

Kelly

A bit random, but hey Jeff I think it'd be great if you added a community tab on your Patreon! I don't know how people are asking you for reactions or if they're simply DM-ing you on your socials, but hopefully, you could avoid the DMs on Patreon with the addition of the tab. I think that it'd at least make your Patreon experience a bit less hectic? Unless you just pay no attention to them then LOL nevermind. Just a thought :)

Byun Tanjuma

Hello Jeff, I have a request, can you please react to Stray Kids’s dance performance in dance battle between YG and JYP if you have not watched it yet?? Please Please please 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

"Euna Kim is pretty much a shoe in for the final line up" I feel like that's what a lot of people thought, including me. Euna Kim is one of those idols/trainees who's very talented and has what it takes to be a star but has been dealt so many bad cards in the industry. Her group "The Ark" who had a very hyped debut, only lasted less than a year before disbandment. Then she continuously did well on this show, only to just barely miss the final line up. She did debut again as a duo KHAN with Jeon Minju (another former The Ark member) but they weren't very active and was quietly disbanded. She did recently announce that she decided to move back to the US, retire from the Entertainment industry, and is getting married soon. As for "Sweet" stage outfits. Personally I liked it even though it is a bit simple. To me, it gives me more of a 2nd gen/early 3rd gen girl group vibe outfit, the ones that did more of a sexy concept. Like I can see Miss A, EXID, AOA, or Girl's Day performing in it. Specifically, this look reminds me of Miss A's Hush era styling.

Secretninja312

One thing I've noticed over the years is that the preferences of girl group concept/style changes over time. In the late 2000s early 2010s, the top girl group were the sexy ones with a more mature image (Girls Day, AOA, Miss A, After School, etc) but by the mid 2010s, that started to die out and was replaced with the cuter more innocent looking groups (Twice, Oh My Girl, Gfriend, Lovelyz). Hyunjoo debuted in 2015 with April, who had that cuter innocent look, so it made sense for the time that the company wanted them to sound younger because that was the appeal of girl groups at the time. But I think around 2017, the preference of girl groups has switched over to Girl Crush which is why we see a lot more groups with an edgier image and less "cute".
