Note: I don't know much about freestyle and b-boying technically so a lot of my comments are from a creative and entertainment perspective.

I've already filmed Ep 8 so I will be uploading that by end of the week!

With battles it’s common to get in each other faces and get close to hitting them and in some cases you do hit them. With break dancing the backflip type of thing acts as more of a transitional move rather than a actual competitive move. Battle culture is very different from regular competition. You can prepare a routine before hand and just match it to the music, but for such it’s really different and fun

Fun fact: one of the judges popping hyunjoon was jisungs dance teacher when he was a kid.

This episode was a real mixed bag for me. While I enjoyed seeing most of the kids in their "natural dance habitat", as most of them live and breathe for dance battles, the excecution was a bit lackluster. The battle between Team Lia Kim and Team Hust Jerk felt way more exciting and better over all since it was rightly set up and the edit was mostly continuously. You could argue it felt better, because they're the top 2 teams and have better over all dancers, but I feel like that isn't really the case and it's more what the show wanted us to believe. The battle between Team Gi Kwang, Team Seung Hoon and Team Hoya was set up to be a let-down. The uneven number went against the notion of one againt one. I'm in no way an expect on battles, but I enjoy watching them especially because of the unique passion it manages to get out of dancers. There's always respect involved, but mostly these dancers are out for blood and want to kill their opponent with their own skills. The first dancer sets the bar, shows their colors and the second one reponse to that, rises to the challenge .. and all that beautiful tension gets sadly broken in a three-way-battle. Whenever two dancers did go head to head and battled each other (whenever Team Hoyas Yoon Jun battled basically, since he's a battle beast and took this one extremly serious), a third swooped in and broke the tension. The kids didn't know which opponent to focus on and thus mostly had fun with the music. You could feel how much more intense the last bit of round 3 was, when Team Hoya was out. And that editing was all over the place. Team Gi Kwangs win should feel like a bigger victory than Team Lia Kims, since the tree teams were always neck and neck, but since you couldn't really see anything you couldn't really appreciate it. Sigh. Kinda sad we couldn't see Jisung dance in that kinda setting, which is totally out off his wheelhouse and probably would have brought out another side of his dancing we don't normaly see. But it's smart to take it easy on his ankle in regards to the final performance and that way we didn't have to worry about people accusing Seulgi of being biased because of him. Highlight of the episode (beside Ye Ri of cause, who was outstanding!!): J-Black being adorable in his reactions :D

i’m checking out dramas this weekend to see which id do next. extraordinary you is on my list! i will watch and film the first episodes of 3 dramas and then decide after that 😁

totally agree on all your points! the 3 way battle was wonky. it could be the editing or just the set up itself. wish we could’ve seen jisung do this too! but yes health comes first!

RisingSunbebe

Aww Jeff, you were so cute when you said 'I believe myself again' hahaha... But I agree with you completely!

For some reason I didn't watch this when it first aired so I'm watching it along with this reaction. I think it is a great option to throw in the freestyle battle as you can see sides of each dancer that the normal competition doesn't show. It's clear how some of them really shined more in this episode. I'm just a casual dancer who goes to dance classes and treats it like exercise so I'm generally out of my depth here but for me when I watch these dance battle videos, the thing that stands out for me for dancers is just a show of their musicality. Yeri was a total stand out in that respect. Most of the bboys in the battle for this episode felt like they were trying to fit the songs into their genre and sometimes when they were given and unsuitable song, the performance looked off and it felt like they were fitting the song to their genre. With Yeri, I think even in previous episode when she did her solo dance and bboyed to that emotional song, we could see that she has such strong musicality and fits her genre to the song. I think this is what makes her outstanding in this episode. She's the best of what we saw. She was technical, entertaining and showed musicality without throwing in tricks just for the sake of it, without “acting”. A few more of them stood out in the same way for me (though not at the same level as Yeri), like Sihyun from team just jerk (the 13 year old), Minhyuk from team lia (the guy who placed #2 in auditions), Yoon Joon from team hoya (tall guy), and Seung Min from team Gikwang (guy who won at the end). What fell short for me from many of the performances we saw was one or a combination of the following: - Lack of musicality and adaptability (trying to make the music fit their genre vs fitting their dance genre to the music) - Too choreographed (lacking the feeling of spontaneity that one gets from watching battles usually) - Performances that were not made to capture the audience’s attention (more entertainment less real dancing or no real memorable highlight or pacing) It's also clear which dancers were more experienced in battles and which were not; I think this kind of makes the "pacing" of the episode feel a bit off because as an audience when we are told we're watching a dance battle we expect something that feels a bit more spontaneous.

Yep I think I saw a few times where musicality influenced my vote such as Minhyuk vs Sihyun battle and also the Bboy from Seunghoon team. I think a lot of dancers are missing the musicality and that showed when he just did tricks and flips continuously without standing dance or freezes. Freezes are my favorite part of breakdance because they show off the musicality in breakdancers .
