ToTellStories and OnCallGM here, working TOGETHER ♥️ to share long-awaited assets from our last episodes!

The Acid Lake

The concept of the Acid Lake originated when I was trying to visualize the approximate size of the Sinkhole for Zoran. I came across LINK: the Berkeley Pit, and the idea of an acid lake stuck with Thurston and I, and I pitched a sunken church to make it appropriately grimdark. The idea of submerged buildings is really neat to me: when I was a kid, my family would fish in a place called Sawmill Bay, so named because of a sunken sawmill in its depths. (It was either from flooding from the nearby hydroelectric dam, or because they built it on ice and then didn’t move it. No one ever said Manitobans were good at planning!) The haunting image of a building lost forever beneath the water was something extremely unique and creepy and great for the Solitude.

Originally I wanted to make the building out of some form of plastic or other material that didn’t melt in acid, but Thurston pointed out we could just… you know, use magic. FINE. Discord community artist MyNameJers loves drawing spooky scary skeletons, and thus the Acid Wraiths haunting the building were a perfect fit.

The players never tried constructing a boat, but if they had, it would have burped extremely dangerous gasses at them, because apparently that’s a thing acid lakes do. Feel free to add that nasty idea into your own campaign!

The Sawsoarer Grove

HOOT HOOT! The Sawsoarers are back… bitch.

This encounter was one I’d been planning since the first time our foul-mouthed fey were introduced into the Narrative Declaration ecosystem. Rehua’s stand-off encounter with a sawsoarer cemented the fan love for them, and I knew it was only a matter of time before we’d get an encounter with a more… royal version.

Enter Great King Sawso… err… the Sawsoarer King! This was a mini-boss style encounter that was originally intended as a bit of a break along the hexploration elements that we’ve been using in Season 2. Combining a tough fight with a grueling second phase that includes swarms of additional sawsoarers, this was intended to really help showcase how useful Baldric’s explosives can be, along with letting spellcasters and melee have some moments to shine. All in all, I think it worked out great!

As usual, ToTellStories put together an absolutely amazing map for the grove, which combines a foresty setting with psychedelic elements that were appropriate for this memorable encounter. Also, you can just hear a certain Final Fantasy XIV boss theme as you begin your fight in this area… bwah ha ha.

Hope this proves useful in torturing your own players!
