Regarding the sound effects you noticed, they sound very familiar to me, too. I'm positive they are the same ones I heard in Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the sixties, such as The Flinstones and The Jetsons. They probably come from a standard sound effects library.

I haven't seen this movie since high school and I'm 30. I was stoked to watch it again with your reaction. Another legendary Japanese anime filmmaker I think you should check out is Satoshi Kon. Perfect Blue is probably his most famous film and Paprika is up there too. Apparently Paprika inspired inception. These movies are definitely not for kids though and can get pretty dark.
