I honestly think that Temple of Doom is one of the most underrated movies of all time. Yes, it's ridiculously cartoony, and I'm sure people who were hoping for a more grounded tone akin to Raiders were probably disappointed. Objectively I can see how Raiders is the better movie. On the other hand, I've probably watched Raiders maybe 10-15 times in my life, while I've watched Temple of Doom literally in the hundreds. Seriously, I wore this shit out on VHS back in the day. The relationship with Indy and Short Round works wonderfully. This is also possibly the most funny, charismatic and committed that Ford has ever been in a movie. Doom also has some of the best set pieces and Indy moments in the entire franchise. (The mine cart chase is my favorite action set piece in the series. Plus the bug tunnel trap, rope bridge scene and the unconventional musical opening are up there too. And Indy towards the end of Doom with his shirt ripped open and a sword in one hand is most iconic Indy look.) The story line goes pretty dark, but in a way that's cool too. Because we get to see Indy fighting against pure evil and ultimately winning. It's like a mashup comic where Bruce Campbell fights Cthulu or something. I do wish that they had given more of a character arc for Kate Capshaw. It's kind of baffling that they didn't, actually.) As it is, her character never really evolves, and it ends up as somewhat of a thankless role. Definitely a flawed movie, but you gotta admire how it swings for the fences.
