I can't really explain it but based on your reaction to this I think you'd get a real kick out of the Watchmen HBO TV show (also a single season miniseries) and The Leftovers (3 seasons on HBO, finished). I know you reacted to the Watchmen movie (not sure if you've read the graphic novel) and the show is a brilliant continuation of the story IMO. I think all 3 shows have a sort of narrative overlap in my head.

The way this show cuts back and forth between timeliness is so expertly done, there's been a few films/ shows that do it and it normally annoys me when not done properly but the way it helps tell the story in a very specific and creative way is so amazing to see, even things like the knife getting sharpened mixed with the score blending everything together I just love it so much. Really enjoying your reaction so far cant wait for more

I really love this show but I also have a gnawing feeling that I'm missing a layer to the story because I don't know the themes of Shakespeare's stories. I still love it, even more so on this rewatch, but that aspect makes me feel quite dumb.

I don't think you're missing too much. The main play covered here is Hamlet, that's the play the Travelling Symphony is performing this year. If you look up a plot summary on wikipedia or video on youtube, it will add some depth, but the short version is its a tragedy about a Prince who seeks revenge on his Uncle for killing the prince's father, after being visited by his father's ghost. Ophelia is the prince's love interest. Something I just realised, but Arthur said that Arthur and Clark played Rosencrantz and Guildenstern together. These are characters in Hamlet too, so that's a connection.
