The cologne he finds washed up on shore is the same cologne he modeled for when he hands his portfolio to the casting people in the opening scene, definitely explains his amused reaction to finding it in that scene. The first time I watched this movie my reaction was pretty similar to yours, slight bewilderment but definitely appreciative of all the different avenues the writer/director decided to take the story. It wasn't until I watched it a 2nd time that it 100% became my favorite film of 2022. That last 2 minutes is still mesmerizing to me.
