CTHD definitely was something else. Wuxia is what the genre is called, super popular, pulpier, martial arts-based stories about legendary fighters dealing with life. Up until this point, nobody came even remotely close to creating something like CTHD, but the 2000s definitely were a bit of a turn-around, if only because Matrix and such, too, finally demonstrated what can be achieved. Pair it with some vivid, traditional Chinese imagery, and you get... this. Recommendations based on that would be Ashes of Time, Fearless, Hero, House of Flying Daggers - the latter two being by far my favorite ones in that category (Zhang Yimou is a full-on powerhouse being half synonymous for top-tier Chinese cinema, his more "common" movies are very much worth watching in their own respect). Hero and House are definitely must-watches if you like the choreography of CTHD, just incredibly competent flicks that will definitely leave a mark. Very distinct movies too. Always great to revisit this one though, what a great cast, Yeoh has been getting tons of attention for obvious reasons this year (still hoping for a dedicated viewing of EEAAO, it's definitely by far my favorite Chinese-language movie at this point), but she just really nails her job where she can. Chow Yun-Fat as this stoic yet romantic master was perfect too, great supporting cast, great dialog and writing, incredible scenery and architectural backdrops (that's China for you, Hero, House and Fearless in particular look like a million bucks without any effort it seems like)... great world-building without being needlessly explicit, fantastic timing with an equally good soundtrack. Yeah, one of the greatest martial arts movies still.
