The duck-and-cover film in the classroom was a real thing back in the fifties, although the one in the film was made up and a bit more over-the-top. They actually instructed kids to hide under their desks, as if that would have mattered. The only difference between the "signature" edition and the theatrical release is restoration of the giant's dream sequence, where he remembers being part of an army of robots. It was cut for some reason from the theatrical release.

The animation is a combination of traditional 2D hand-drawn animation for characters and backgrounds, and computer animation for things like the robot, cars, anything that is mechanical or complicated to animate, like the waves in the prolog.
