Do I need to play any games before jumping into the God of War game from 2018? What I've found online is people saying that you can watch a history of Kratos video on YouTube and then jump into the 2018 game, does that sound like a good plan to follow? And if so, should I film a reaction to the video?

Ok so I've found 3 recap video options so far. There's 2 cutscene videos, one is really long and I'd just stop before it got to the 2018 one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT2xvWR0eaw the second one is just over 3 hours, not sure what it covers since it doesn't have chapters like the other: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWPqhfHQ7F4 and then the last is just a 20 minute recap video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-suycIDMhEE that one feels like it'd be a bit too short. If anyone who's familiar with the games could let me know which might be the best option that'd be super helpful, or if you have a video that might work better feel free to mention it!

I just played it without knowing anything before and loved it, so I think you'll be ok going in blind

I played 2018, without playing any of the original God Of Wars, it was still a phenomenal experience, but watching a video on "what happened before" would help just flush out the story Morse for emotional reasons

Whats a reaction video?

Certainly in a perfect world with unlimited time and resources (the older games can be hard to access) you'd benefit from playing all of them. But for me, I played 2018 with only a passing knowledge of God of War and Kratos, having never played or watched any of the previous games. It still became my favorite single player game ever at the time -- only surpassed by the sequel that just released. I think the most pragmatic approach is to watch a recap of the older games and jump right in to 2018. Regarding what recap to watch, I would actually suggest the 20 minute video with a couple of caveats: 1) Watch it on 0.75x speed (if not 0.5x) because it moves very quickly from point to point, and 2) Watch it once to get the general picture, then watch a second time to pick up on the details. Ultimately, 2018 was a "new beginning". It rewards you with callbacks if you're familiar with the previous games, but no foreknowledge is strictly necessary.

Hey Brandon, There’s a couple of easily digestible 15-20 minute ‘story recap’ videos you can find on YT, two of which I’ll link below. I think it’s worth watching both because they’re each revealing in different ways. These are my personal recommendations regarding preparation for GOW2018. https://youtu.be/YETCT15X4gE https://youtu.be/-suycIDMhEE (Try to avoid comment sections because of potential spoilers). Have fun!

You’ll be okay going in blind. If you want additional context, one of those recap videos will help.

I think watching a recap first would be for the best, and if you recorded a reaction to it I think that’d be really fun :)

I played God Of War (2018) without having played any of the previous games and with minimal knowledge on them and I had an amazing time and followed everything pretty well, but I think watching a recap video would definitely be more beneficial

I think watching a recap would be great

Jordan O'Leary up there commented with 2 links, I think those are pretty good and not long (3 hour video might be to much haha). I think it would be fun to watch your reaction to the videos, that way if you have any question, we could answer them too, spoiler free

Ok so I’ve played all the original trilogy and God of War 2018 is considered the start of a new era for the franchise. While it does make a few references to events from the original series, it’s meant to be inclusive for new players to jump in without any background. That being said, I think the short 20 minute recap is a decent option just to understand who Kratos is as a character. The 3 hour + options are overkill IMO

You could hop into 2018 without knowing about the previous games but there are alot of call back and emotional moments you will miss out on. A story recap should be enough, 2018 hits harder knowing what happened to Kratos before.
