I really, really like this movie - remember loving it when it came out, but haven't rewatched it in a couple of years. Although I don't feel the criticism you explained at the end, from my own point of view, I still find what you're saying completely legit and I understand the drawbacks you explained. For me the cinematography, sound design and overall mood makes it work as an experience, and sometimes for me, when it hits right, all the other stuff doesn't really matter. I actually really like Wingard's Blair Witch-movie, that most people seem to dislike, but I think that some of what logic that makes The Guest work for me applies to Blair Witch, even though they are completely different movies.
