Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are fantastic and deserve all the praise they receive. However, I prefer the movies of writer, director and animator Makoto Shinkai. Your Name has kept its lead over Spirited Away as the current highest grossing anime so there are a lot of Makoto fans like me out there. His new movie, Weathering With You, will finally get released on Blue-ray and dvd on September 20th which is great since you can not stream it in USA. His debut in 2002, Voices of a Distant Star, is a 30 minute masterpiece which he wrote, directed and produced entirely by himself on his Power Mac G4. He and his wife even did the voice acting. Including his new film, he has seven movies to watch but I would watch them in order from earliest. You can find many of them on youtube. He uses veteran voice actor Michael Sinterniklaas for most of his english dubs so you can watch dub first so you can focus on visuals then watch again in original language. His movies are very romantic and often very bitter-sweet.

Completely agree Makoto Shinkai directs amazing films and it's pretty sad that his earlier work gets overlooked because of the hype around 'Your Name'. Mamoru Hosoda is also another great director.
