Yeah they use less CGI for fights, later on its mostly exclusive to like big monsters that'd be a massive pain in the ass to actively animate in 2d over and over, or mass swarms of things.

Yeah, this. Most of the like 1v1s or small groups of enemies are normal animation if I remember correctly.
